Grand Theft Auto VI may be carrying a surprisingly large part of the console market on its shoulders.

Newzoo forecasts console gaming revenue to reach $46.9 billion in 2026, up 5.1% year over year, with GTA VI’s November launch described as one of the year’s critical growth drivers. More strikingly, the analytics firm believes console revenue would likely decline year over year without Rockstar’s blockbuster arriving on schedule.

We already knew Grand Theft Auto VI was going to be big. What is becoming clearer is just how much of the wider games business is now being built around it.

According to Newzoo’s latest Global Games Market Report, GTA VI is not simply expected to generate enormous software sales. Its November 19 launch is also expected to lift full-game spending, bring more players into the current console generation and influence how other publishers schedule their own releases.

That puts Rockstar’s next game in an unusual position. GTA VI is not just competing inside the console market. It may be one of the main reasons that market grows at all this year.

GTA VI is propping up console growth in 2026

Newzoo currently expects the global games business to generate around $213.9 billion in 2026, representing growth of 6.1% compared with the previous year.

Console gaming is forecast to account for $46.9 billion of that total, up 5.1% year over year.

GTA VI is a major part of that forecast.

Newzoo expects full-game console spending to climb by approximately 17.5% this year, the fastest growth among the platform’s major business models. Rockstar’s game is specifically identified as the release anchoring that surge.

The more dramatic finding is what happens if GTA VI is removed from the equation.

Newzoo’s outlook indicates that without GTA VI launching in November, console revenue would likely decline year over year rather than grow.

That does not mean every dollar of console growth belongs to Rockstar. Subscription revenue, higher prices and other releases all contribute to the market.

But it does show the unusual scale of GTA VI’s expected impact. Few individual games are large enough to noticeably change a global platform forecast.

GTA VI could sell more PS5 and Xbox consoles too

The effect is not limited to software.

GTA VI currently has confirmed versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no official PC release date announced.

That makes the game a powerful reason for players who are still using older hardware to finally move to the current console generation.

Newzoo expects GTA VI to help accelerate what it describes as Gen-9 adoption. In practical terms, some players who have delayed purchasing a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S may decide that Rockstar’s new open-world game is the release that finally justifies upgrading.

The timing matters because the console hardware business has faced growing pressure from higher component and memory costs. Newzoo notes that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all dealt with rising hardware prices across 2025 and 2026.

A blockbuster capable of persuading millions of players that they need current-generation hardware is therefore particularly valuable.

Rockstar itself is leaning into the platform connection. The official GTA VI site currently lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms and highlights PlayStation 5 as the platform on which the game “plays best.”

GTA VI is already generating huge spending before launch

The most remarkable part may be that GTA VI is already producing blockbuster numbers months before anyone can actually play it.

Preorders opened on June 25.

Newzoo estimated that digital GTA VI preorders generated approximately $180 million during the first week across the United States and five major European markets: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Based on the preorder curve, Newzoo projected that GTA VI could reach roughly $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in cumulative global sales by the end of its launch week.

The analytics company described it as the strongest opening preorder campaign in its dataset.

Those are forecasts rather than guaranteed launch results, but they help explain why analysts are treating GTA VI differently from almost every other premium game.

It is not waiting until November to influence industry revenue.

It is doing it already.

There is a downside for games launching near GTA VI

Being the industry’s biggest release creates another effect: everybody else has to decide whether they really want to stand next to it.

Newzoo warns that GTA VI carries a cannibalization risk for games releasing around its November window.

That risk comes from more than direct genre competition.

A player spending $79.99 on GTA VI may simply have less money for another full-price game that month. More importantly, GTA games tend to absorb enormous amounts of player attention, potentially making it harder for nearby releases to maintain engagement after launch.

This helps explain why GTA VI can shape release calendars even for publishers making completely different games.

Rockstar does not need to steal every potential sale from a competitor. It only needs to consume enough time, money and attention to make launching alongside it uncomfortable.

There are exceptions, of course. The Binding of Isaac: Repentance + Online, for example, is currently scheduled to arrive on consoles on the same day as GTA VI, November 19.

That is a much smaller release aimed at a very different audience, but it also demonstrates just how strange the GTA VI launch window is becoming.

GTA VI is now less than three months from release

Grand Theft Auto VI is officially scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar opened preorders in June, with the Standard Edition priced at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.

Digital preload begins on November 12, giving preorder customers time to prepare for what could be one of the largest game launches ever recorded.

Take-Two is also forecasting a record fiscal year around the release. In August, the publisher reiterated expected fiscal 2027 Net Bookings of between $8.0 billion and $8.2 billion, specifically pointing to excitement around GTA VI’s November debut.

That is the broader story behind Newzoo’s console forecast.

GTA VI is expected to sell an extraordinary number of copies, but its impact may go much further. It can encourage hardware upgrades, reshape release calendars, lift premium game spending and push players who have been sitting on the edge of the current console generation into finally buying a system.

If Newzoo’s forecast holds, GTA VI will not merely dominate the console charts in late 2026. It will be one of the main reasons the entire console business finishes the year in growth.
