GTA VI may be an enormous time investment.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says one of his recent playthroughs lasted around 80 hours, although that figure included both the campaign and optional content with narrative consequences.

One Rockstar Developer Spent Around 80 Hours on a GTA VI Playthrough
The estimate comes directly from Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, who completed a playthrough of GTA VI in February 2026.
According to Insider Gaming and additional reporting surrounding Rockstar’s recent previews, Nelson’s run took roughly 80 hours and covered the story alongside some optional objectives and activities.
Importantly, this was not the final retail build, so the number should not be treated as Rockstar announcing an official “80-hour campaign.”

Some Optional GTA VI Content Can Affect the Narrative
The most interesting part may not actually be the number.
Nelson’s playthrough included optional goals with narrative ramifications, suggesting that some activities outside the critical path can influence Jason and Lucia’s wider story.
That fits with other information revealed after the Extended Look. GTA VI features a relationship system for its two protagonists, a huge range of side activities, more interactive NPCs, and systems that encourage players to spend time living in Leonida rather than simply moving from mission marker to mission marker.

Rockstar also wants players to engage with the mundane side of the world. Nelson has spoken about people potentially getting up, changing clothes, exercising, and generally treating Leonida like a place to inhabit rather than a backdrop for missions.
That philosophy makes an 80-hour playthrough much easier to understand. GTA VI seems designed to constantly tempt you away from the next story objective.
GTA VI Is Not Confirmed to Have an 80-Hour Main Story
This distinction matters.
Nelson’s personal run does not mean everyone will need 80 hours to finish GTA VI. A player rushing through critical missions could be considerably faster, while somebody exploring Leonida, completing side objectives, developing Jason and Lucia’s relationship, and experimenting with the game’s activities could easily take longer.
So how long is GTA VI? We still do not have an official main-story completion time. What we do know is that a Rockstar developer’s campaign-focused playthrough with additional narrative and optional content lasted approximately 80 hours.
For comparison, Rockstar is pitching Leonida as an unusually deep and interactive world, with Vice City joined by regions including the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.
In other words, finishing the story may be one thing. Seeing everything Rockstar has hidden across Leonida could be a very different commitment.

80 Hours May Only Be the Beginning
An 80-hour developer playthrough already puts GTA VI firmly in big-game territory, but the more important detail is how that time was spent.
If optional objectives can affect the narrative and Rockstar genuinely succeeds in making Leonida worth inhabiting rather than simply completing, many players could spend considerably longer there.
The final answer to “how long is GTA VI?” will have to wait until November. For now, it looks increasingly unlikely to be a short trip back to Vice City.
