Grand Theft Auto VI has received one of its biggest information drops yet, and the new details go much further than another list of activities.

Game Informer’s new GTA VI cover story explores how Rockstar is building Leonida as a denser, more reactive open world, with a major focus on interiors, dynamic weather, wildlife, vehicle theft, robberies and player choice.

Among the biggest details are more than 170 animal species, fully localized weather capable of producing tropical storms and hurricanes, a deeper system for stealing expensive cars, and a relationship between Jason and Lucia that can develop differently depending on how the player approaches the story.

The information comes from Game Informer’s 14-page GTA VI cover feature, which is based on new interviews with Rockstar developers and a closer examination of how the studio recreated its fictional version of Florida. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The biggest new GTA VI details: more interiors, RydeMe fast travel, relationship choices for Jason and Lucia, specialized car theft tools, vehicle scanning, localized hurricanes and wind, 170+ animal species, dozens of activities, more varied NPCs, flexible robberies and story decisions designed to encourage multiple playthroughs.

GTA VI is putting much more emphasis on interiors

Leonida is not only getting a larger collection of locations to drive past. According to Game Informer, GTA VI contains more explorable interiors than any previous Rockstar game, with the studio placing additional emphasis on building interiors, rooftops and alleys.

That should make exploration more vertical and less dependent on simply following roads between major landmarks. Rockstar has repeatedly described GTA VI as its most immersive version of the series yet, and a greater number of usable interior spaces could make individual neighborhoods feel more like places to explore than scenery surrounding mission markers.

The pause-menu map has also received a visual overhaul. Game Informer describes it as having a new satellite-style presentation, making Leonida appear more like an actual mapped environment than the simplified overhead layouts used in older entries.

RydeMe works as an in-game ride-share service

Players who do not want to drive everywhere can use RydeMe, an in-universe ride-sharing service that functions as fast travel.

The journey is not necessarily just a loading shortcut. Shared RydeMe rides can include other passengers, and Jason or Lucia can interact with them during the trip. That gives Rockstar another opportunity to fill travel time with the strange conversations and incidental characters the series is known for.

Jason and Lucia do not have to follow one fixed romantic path

Rockstar has already made it clear that Jason and Lucia’s partnership is central to GTA VI, but their personal relationship appears to be more flexible than the trailers alone suggested.

According to the latest details, the pair can remain relatively platonic or develop a stronger romantic relationship depending on player decisions. Their criminal partnership remains important either way, but the nature of their bond can affect parts of the story.

That gives apparently small decisions outside major missions more weight. Spending time together, completing jobs as a pair and making particular narrative choices may all contribute to how Jason and Lucia see one another as the campaign develops.

Car theft is becoming an actual criminal skill

For a series named Grand Theft Auto, stealing a car has traditionally been extremely straightforward. GTA VI is making expensive vehicles considerably harder to acquire.

Some high-end cars can require specialized tools to break into or steal, while more expensive vehicles can use sophisticated security systems and trackers. In other words, grabbing the most valuable car in sight may now involve actual preparation rather than simply opening a door and driving away.

WAiNK lets you scan vehicles before stealing them

Jason and Lucia’s phone includes an app called WAiNK, which can scan vehicles and provide information about what you are dealing with.

The app can identify security systems and trackers while also displaying registration costs and resale value. That potentially turns vehicle theft into a small risk-reward calculation: a car may be valuable, but the tools, security and attention required to steal it could make another target more attractive.

GTA VI has localized weather, persistent puddles and hurricanes

Rockstar’s recreation of Florida goes well beyond palm trees and beaches. Game Informer’s cover story describes a heavily re-engineered weather simulation building on the technology behind Red Dead Redemption 2.

Weather is localized, meaning different parts of Leonida can experience different conditions at the same time. One area may be sunny while heavy rain falls somewhere nearby.

Fully dynamic cloud formations move across the state and generate changing weather patterns. Rain can create puddles and wet surfaces that remain after a storm has passed, while the interaction between moisture and sunlight can produce realistic rainbows.

Wind is simulated too

The wind system includes offshore breezes, convectional updrafts and the way buildings block or redirect airflow. Wind can affect hair, loose debris, water surfaces and vegetation rather than functioning only as an invisible weather value.

Most importantly for a game based on Florida, tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed. Game Informer describes severe weather with dense cloud cover, heavy rain, powerful winds, thunder, lightning and water pouring from buildings and other structures.

Leonida has more than 170 animal species

Wildlife may be one of the clearest examples of Rockstar pushing the simulation side of GTA VI. Leonida contains more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of birds and more than 30 land mammals.

Confirmed species include alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, armadillos and rhesus macaques. The selection includes both species native to Florida and invasive wildlife that has become part of the state’s ecosystem.

The surrounding ocean and waterways are populated too. Sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish are among the confirmed marine animals, and individual species are designed to move differently rather than sharing one generic underwater behavior.

Animals have more advanced materials and fur simulation

Rockstar is expanding the animal technology developed for Red Dead Redemption 2. Different creatures can demonstrate visual properties such as iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency, alongside more advanced feathers, hair and fur.

Fur can become wet, dirty, matted or clumped depending on environmental conditions. Certain wildlife can also be tracked, with animals placed into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories.

There is a lot to do when you are not committing crimes

GTA VI continues Rockstar’s push toward an open world where the player can spend hours ignoring the main plot. The new details confirm or reinforce a broad range of optional activities spread across Leonida.

Confirmed activityType
Base jumpingExtreme sports
BilliardsIndoor activity
GymsCharacter activity
KayakingWater activity
Mini golfSport
Scuba divingUnderwater exploration
Street and off-road racingMotorsport
ZoosWorld activity
Air boatingWater travel
Jet skiingWater sport

Several of these activities were previously visible in Rockstar’s Extended Look, but the Game Informer coverage further reinforces how much effort is going into making Leonida function as somewhere to live in rather than simply a backdrop for missions.

NPCs have more varied bodies, clothing and cultural details

Rockstar is also putting significantly more variety into Leonida’s population. NPCs can have different heights, body shapes, musculature and localized body-fat distribution instead of appearing as a small number of standard body templates.

Skin can include freckles, moles and different levels of tanning. Rockstar has also worked on culturally appropriate hairstyles, tattoos and grooming styles designed around the different communities represented across the state.

Clothing can vary depending on location and social situation, while dirt, weathering and fit can change how individual outfits appear. Game Informer says GTA VI features the largest variety of clothing and accessories Rockstar has created so far.

Robberies can be solo, cooperative and approached differently

Crime remains the center of GTA VI, but robberies are becoming more flexible. Jobs can be completed alone or with Jason and Lucia working together, and players can choose between fast, aggressive approaches or slower, more careful methods.

That choice can matter beyond the amount of money earned. Completing robberies together can strengthen Jason and Lucia’s relationship, linking the crime systems directly to their personal story.

Money can also affect mission availability. Some missions only become available once the protagonists have enough cash, suggesting that earning money is not simply about buying cars, weapons and clothes. Financial progression can influence which opportunities appear next.

The interesting connection: GTA VI appears to tie its systems together more tightly than GTA V. Robberies can influence relationships, money can unlock missions, vehicle security changes which cars are worth stealing, and weather can alter the same open world rather than simply changing its appearance.

Player choice is supposed to make repeat playthroughs meaningfully different

Perhaps the most significant story detail is Rockstar’s apparent commitment to player choice. Game Informer’s information suggests decisions both large and small can alter the direction of GTA VI’s story.

That includes Jason and Lucia’s relationship, but it is not limited to romance. The broader goal appears to be a campaign in which different choices lead players toward different situations, relationships and mission paths.

GTA has included major decisions before, but GTA VI seems to be making choice more central to the structure rather than saving it for a small number of obvious branching moments near the end of the story.

If Rockstar delivers on that design, the result should be a campaign built with repeat playthroughs in mind. A second run could differ not only because you choose different missions or weapons, but because Jason and Lucia’s relationship and the opportunities available to them develop along another path.

GTA VI is looking increasingly like Rockstar’s most systemic open world

The striking part of this information drop is how few of these features exist completely in isolation. Weather changes the world after a storm. Wind interacts with characters and vegetation. Expensive vehicles have security systems that can be identified through an app. Robberies affect both money and relationships. Money can affect mission availability. Wildlife is not just decorative but can be tracked and categorized.

That is much closer to the simulation-heavy philosophy behind Red Dead Redemption 2 than the comparatively lightweight world systems of GTA V. GTA VI still looks unmistakably like Grand Theft Auto, but Rockstar appears to be borrowing many of the lessons it learned while making its western feel alive.

With launch now approaching, the question is becoming less about how large Leonida is and more about how many systems Rockstar can make interact convincingly once millions of players start breaking them in ways the developers never expected.
