Starting trouble in GTA VI may have more consequences than watching pedestrians run away and waiting for the wanted stars to disappear.

Rockstar says Leonida’s NPCs can react more aggressively to the player, while a new Criminal Profile system allows police to identify Jason and Lucia by their appearance, clothing, vehicle, and even whether they were seen together.

GTA VI’s NPCs May Not Run Away From You Anymore

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN that GTA VI is moving away from the feeling that the player is the only truly dangerous person walking around the city.

In previous GTA games, causing trouble often resulted in nearby pedestrians immediately fleeing unless police were involved. GTA VI’s population can be considerably less predictable. Some NPCs may cower or escape, while others can confront the player, fight back, or escalate an altercation themselves.

That could make seemingly minor free-roam encounters much less predictable. Picking a fight with the wrong person might create an entirely new problem before the police even arrive.

Police Can Build a Criminal Profile of Jason and Lucia

The bigger change is GTA VI’s new Criminal Profile system.

If Jason or Lucia are witnessed committing a crime, police can receive information describing the suspect. That information can include:

  • which protagonist was seen,
  • the clothes they were wearing,
  • the vehicle connected to the crime,
  • and whether Jason and Lucia were spotted acting together or separately.

This confirms one of the more interesting ideas previously spotted in leaked development footage. Earlier builds appeared to show separate HUD indicators for the player, clothing, and vehicle, but at the time it was unclear whether those icons really represented a police identification system.

Now we know the basic concept is real.

What changes? Losing a wanted level may no longer completely erase the consequences of a poorly planned crime. Police can remember details connected to the suspects, making appearance and vehicle choice part of the escape.

Changing Clothes or Splitting Up Could Help You Disappear

According to the preview details, players may need to change clothing, abandon a recognized vehicle, or separate Jason and Lucia to make themselves harder to identify.

That is a significant change from the classic GTA routine of leaving the search area and waiting for the wanted level to expire.

The city itself may make escapes more difficult too. Nelson says GTA VI’s streets are narrower and built at a more realistic scale, while heavier traffic means simply flooring the accelerator through Vice City may require more skill than it did in Los Santos.

Taken together, reactive NPCs, suspect descriptions, recognized vehicles, and denser roads suggest Rockstar wants even ordinary crimes to generate more interesting consequences.

Crime in GTA VI Looks Much Harder to Erase

Rockstar is not removing the chaos that defines Grand Theft Auto. It is making the world better at reacting to it.

If witnesses can remember your clothes, police can connect a vehicle to a crime, and random civilians might decide to fight back instead of running, the simple act of causing trouble in Vice City could create much more interesting stories than before.

For once, losing the cops may require more than hiding in an alley and watching the stars disappear.
