GTA VI may launch without a full first-person mode.

A creator who attended a Rockstar North preview says the game is currently focused on third-person gameplay, although some limited first-person aiming may still be available in specific situations.

The claim comes from creator Davy Jones, who was among those invited to Rockstar North in Edinburgh for a closer look at GTA VI.

Insider Gaming reports that he said there is no full first-person perspective available in the current version of the game. However, the outlet also stresses that it is difficult to verify whether this was directly confirmed by Rockstar or simply based on what was shown during the preview.

GTA VI Looks Set to Prioritize Third-Person Gameplay

That would fit everything Rockstar has shown so far.

The recent Extended Look presents GTA VI almost entirely from a third-person perspective, whether Jason and Lucia are walking through Vice City, driving, fighting, exploring, or taking part in side activities.

A separate report published today also says Rockstar is concentrating on detailed third-person animation and character interactions rather than building the launch version around a complete first-person experience. Limited first-person aiming with some weapons may still be possible.

GTA V Did Not Launch With First-Person Either

There is some useful precedent here.

The original GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 without first-person gameplay. Rockstar added the feature with the PS4 and Xbox One versions in November 2014, with the PC version following afterward. Rockstar described it at the time as an entirely new first-person mode covering both GTA V and GTA Online.

So GTA VI launching without the feature would not necessarily mean it is gone forever. A post-launch update or later edition could theoretically add it, but there is currently no official announcement from Rockstar saying that will happen.

Worth knowing: treat this as a reported launch detail, not a formal Rockstar feature announcement. Rockstar has not published a specification page explicitly stating that GTA VI is third-person only.

Why Third-Person Makes Sense for GTA VI

GTA VI appears to place much more emphasis on detailed character animation, clothing, physical appearance, and the relationship between Jason and Lucia. Those systems are naturally easier to appreciate when the protagonists remain visible on screen.

The Extended Look also showed character switching, gym workouts, more reactive NPC encounters, vehicle interactions, and a large number of social activities. A third-person focus allows Rockstar to keep those animations and physical details front and center.

For players who preferred driving and shooting through Los Santos entirely from inside the character’s eyes, though, the reported omission will still be disappointing.

Third Person First, First Person Maybe Later

For now, the safest conclusion is simple: GTA VI appears to be designed primarily as a third-person game at launch.

That does not rule out first-person support forever. GTA V itself gained the feature after its original release, and Rockstar could repeat that approach. But until Rockstar says otherwise, players expecting to experience all of Vice City through Jason or Lucia’s eyes should keep expectations in check.
