Bandai Namco has released the opening cinematic for ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE, and it does much more than throw another montage of missiles, clouds, and fighter jets at us. The video walks through the campaign’s opening setup and makes its central idea crystal clear: the “Wings of Theve” is a manufactured legend, and the player is about to inherit it.
Published on September 24, just before the game’s October 2 launch, the cinematic gives the sequel a much sharper story hook than “new war, new ace.” Rex is not starting from nothing. He is being handed the identity of a national hero and expected to make the myth real while the Federation of Central Usea is fighting for survival.
The big takeaway: ACE COMBAT 8 flips the usual ace-pilot fantasy around. Instead of becoming a legend and then receiving the reputation, Rex receives the legend first and has to prove he deserves it.

The Wings of Theve was always a manufactured legend

The most interesting part of the new opening is not the aircraft. It is what the game is doing with the idea of an ace.
Jan Cope is introduced as the original bearer of the Wings of Theve identity, a famous pilot and symbol of hope connected to Theve, the capital of the Federation of Central Usea. There is just one problem: the legend was manufactured.
Bandai Namco’s official character material describes Cope as a skilled pilot, particularly when it came to evasive flying, who was selected for a project designed to create an ace the public could rally around. The reputation came first. Reality was supposed to catch up later.
That fits Ace Combat almost suspiciously well. This is a series that loves impossible pilots, exaggerated battlefield reputations, dramatic callsigns, military propaganda, and entire armies discovering that one aircraft has somehow become their biggest strategic problem. ACE COMBAT 8 is simply making that process part of the plot from the beginning.
What the opening cinematic sets up
The campaign takes place in Strangereal after the Lighthouse War. The Federation of Central Usea has been attacked by the Republic of Sotoa, its homeland is occupied, and its surviving forces are in a desperate position.
Rex, the player pilot, begins as one of two survivors picked up from the ocean by the FCU aircraft carrier Endurance alongside mechanic David Jenkins. That puts Rex in the orbit of Jan Cope and Joker Flight, the squadron that will eventually become the center of the campaign.
During a later scouting flight, Cope is killed after the aircraft is shot down. Rex survives. Losing the famous Wings of Theve at that point would be disastrous for morale, so the identity does not die with the man who carried it.
Rex becomes the new Wings of Theve and takes command of Joker Flight as Joker 1.
That is the actual starting line for the campaign: you are not simply another talented rookie climbing through the ranks. You are replacing a dead national symbol while almost everyone around you needs that symbol to remain believable.
Ace Combat 8 reverses the Trigger story
This also creates a neat contrast with Ace Combat 8 vs. Ace Combat 7.
Trigger starts Ace Combat 7 as a pilot and gradually becomes a legend because everybody keeps watching him do things that should probably require an entire air force. Reputation follows performance.
Rex gets the opposite deal. The reputation already exists. The country needs its legendary ace, so the player receives the title before earning it.
That gives ACE COMBAT 8 an unusually clean character arc for a series built around largely silent player pilots. Every successful sortie can now serve two purposes: winning the actual war and slowly turning the FCU’s manufactured propaganda into something real.
There is more changing than the story
The cinematic focus does not mean Bandai Namco is turning Ace Combat into an interactive movie. The familiar arcade-style dogfighting is still the foundation, but Wings of Theve is expanding several systems around it.
- Wingman commands: Rex can issue real-time attack and cover orders to Joker Flight.
- First-person story scenes: the campaign includes more interaction with squad members outside the cockpit.
- Living skies: Unreal Engine 5 and Bandai Namco’s Cloudly technology power dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes and weather.
- Chain destruction: certain targets can trigger cascading destruction during large battles.
- ACE COMBAT ONLINE: a separate multiplayer ecosystem with cross-play, co-op, PvPvE, progression, special missions, and Air Base social hubs supporting up to 100 players.

A fake legend, a real war, and one week to go
The new opening cinematic works because it finally connects the title Wings of Theve to the player’s actual role. It is not just another cool callsign. It is a piece of wartime mythology designed to keep a defeated country believing that somebody can still save it.
Now Rex has to climb into a fighter, carry that lie into battle, and make it true.
For Ace Combat, that is about as appropriate a job description as you could ask for.
