This may not be the return you’ve been hoping for, but still. Adi Shankar obtained the rights to the Duke Nukem franchise and is now seeking to do it justice.

Gaming’s own Schwarzenegger, Mr Nukem got wronged with Duke Nukem Forever, a game that lingered in development hell for fourteen freakin’ years, got released in a pretty much incomplete state in 2011, and got absolutely trashed by the gaming community, ultimately taking the iconic character with it, making him vanish into obscurity.

Things are about to change, though. Adi Shankar, a producer known for stuff like Dredd, Castlevania, Devil May Cry and a handful of other Netflix shows, and his Bootleg Universe fan films, got his hands on the rights to the franchise – not gaming rights, though, as he himself confirmed – and now wants to do cool stuff with it.

Here’s what he has to say about the project:

“It’s a middle finger to everybody. When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it’s just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can’t be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it’s no longer Duke Nukem. I don’t intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.”

What’s he got in the works? We’ll have to wait and see, but judging by the love Adi Shankar shows his projects, this might be something pretty big. Maybe another hit Netflix show? Maybe a theatrical release? Only time will tell.
