What’s the OG survival horror? If you thought of Resident Evil, well, nope!

1992’s Alone in the Dark is in fact the game which laid the groundwork for the genre, blending adventure elements, puzzle solving, horror, and action. And now this cult classic is getting a modern remake.

Clearly inspired by the modern RE games, Alone in the Dark ditches fixed camera angles in favor of a third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective. Just like the original, it focuses on the exploits of a private investigator named Edward Carnby and his client, Emily Hartwood. Emily’s uncle, Jeremy, mysteriously disappeared, so they head to Derceto Manor to search for answers. What follows, however, is pure horror.

You get to play as either Edward or Emily, played by David Harbour and Jodie Comer, respectively, and experience a mix of Southern gothic and H. P. Lovecraft’s brand of creepy from two differing perspectives. With a story written by Mikael Hedberg, the man responsible for such classics as SOMA and Amnesia, and a “doom jazz” soundtrack, you can expect a truly terrifying, but also loving homage to a survival horror that started it all.

Alone in the Dark drops on March 20, 2024.
