Get all your Anthem antics out of your system in the next few months.
While some people will be surprised to learn Anthem’s been playable for all these years, the ill-fated, power armor-driven science fiction game from Bioware is scheduled to join all the other live-service games happily living on a farm upstate, don’t worry about it.
The game’s publisher, EA, announced in a pretty matter-of-factly blog note that the online-only game will meet its end on January 12, 2026. It means the existing and prospective players have just a few months to experience and/or enjoy its world, power armors, and moment-to-moment gameplay. Anthem is also getting dropped from the EA Play service on August 15 this year, so if you’ve relied on it to play the game, it will sunset much earlier for you.

As a part of the closing down process, the option to purchase premium currency will be off as well, although your existing balance, if you have any, will not be affected and you’ll be able to spend it until the serves go offline.
The good news is that closing Anthem down apparently doesn’t come with an additional round of layoffs at BioWare, which is said to currently operate with a team of about 100 developers as it works on the next Mass Effect game, following the divisive and middling-at-best reception of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Anthem launched in 2019 after a lengthy and troubled development, as a studio accustomed to singleplayer RPGs wound up making a multiplayer, always online action game. Despite admittedly pretty cool designs and a world which would be interesting to explore in a highly mobile power armor, the game struggled to find audience.
What audience it did find, didn’t stay long either, as Destiny 2 and Warframe operated on close-enough principles and had a stronger offer for people looking for live service science fiction/space fantasy action. Remarkably, both D2 and WF are still going strong, with new content updates drawing in both new and returning players.
All that said, sunsetting of Anthem does highlight the importance of the Stop Killing Games initiative, as, regardless of personal opinions about the game, it shouldn’t be condemned to oblivion just because its servers are to be shut down.
In any case, you have until January 12 to play Anthem, after which point it will be unplayable due to server shutdown. More like a Dirge, than an Anthem, really.
