The latest Battlefield release has brought plenty of excitement for fans — and the surprises keep coming. Battlefield 6 is going free-to-play, debuting a brand-new battle royale mode called RedSec.

Launching on October 28, the mode will initially feature only Duos and Squads. Let’s take a closer look at this new addition to the iconic EA shooter series.

Battlefield 6 RedSec – What we know so far

Battlefield 6 free RedSec battle royale has been revealed as a shadow drop mode, launching with only two limited options — Duos and Squads — according to insiders and recent leaks. In practice, this means players can only team up in groups of two or four. Each 100 player match allows for either 50 teams of two or 25 teams of four.

A 100-player setup sounds exciting, but some fans might be disappointed to learn that solo play or alternative team sizes aren’t available at launch. However, there’s a strong possibility that more modes and team options will be added in the future.

The battle royale release in Battlefield 6 is not a big surprise, as popular titles like Fortnite or Call of Duty have already explored the genre. Now, EA and DICE are aiming to bring Battlefield’s signature scale and chaos to the free to play shooter space.

Battlefield BR modes

Battlefield 6’s RedSec isn’t the first time EA has experimented with a battle royale mode. Back in 2019, with the release of Battlefield V, the studio introduced a similar concept called Firestorm. It featured a massive new map and the franchise’s trademark environmental destruction. However, a lack of proper promotion and tough competition from huge titles like Warzone and Apex Legends meant the mode never reached major success.

With Battlefield 6’s new shadow drop BR and its free-to-play approach, EA and DICE are now aiming to merge the series’ trademark large-scale chaos with the fast-paced intensity of the battle royale genre.
