No more monkey business, the next Black Myth game from Game Science will go more into exorcism, probably, maybe. We have little to go on for now.

The new game in what is clearly going to be a series, is called Black Myth: Zhong Kui, and will revolve around a Taoist deity known for his talent for defeating evil spirits, and presented traditionally as an angry-looking, black-bearded man of remarkable size. What does it mean for the game? At this moment, pretty much all we have is a very Black Myth-like CGI teaser trailer and a bit of largely generalist description. It would possibly be a stretch to call it a Black Myth: Wukong sequel, but they are likely to be connected in more than aesthetics.

Black Myth – New Game Series is Coming

It will be a single-player action RPG… and that’s about it. The game is deep in development, so the trailer revealed during this year’s Gamescom ONL showcase is more of mood-setter. Given how BM: Wukong turned out, at the very least we can probably expect fancy graphics, great style, and some conversation with the original Chinese folklore involving the character.

It might also be interesting to see how the Western audience will take to the new protagonist. Sun Wukong is a fairly recognizable figure in the West, known through many, many adaptations and works inspired by Journey to the West, but Zhong Kui is much less familiar. Will BMW’s popularity be sufficient to support BMZK outside of China? Time will tell. If it works out well, then Game Science reportedly has a whole bunch of other trademarks for other figures of Chinese mythology.

The FAQ on BM: Zhong Kui’s official website offers little extra insight, but it is refreshingly honest and open about the intent and current state of development, described as “little more than an empty folder at this stage”.

As Game Science seems committed to making big status updates on August 20th, a year from now we might get a much better look at what the Chinese mythology-themed RPG about a ghost-catching god will be like. Time will tell, as it often does.
