Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 patch 1.4.0 finally delivers what its community has requested since the release. Despite the game’s great condition at its premiere, there was still room for minor improvements and quality of life changes, which were introduced in the most recent update.

Patch 1.4.0 lets you rematch all fights without reloads, adds Lumina cost readouts, and buffs PC visuals with DLSS/XeSS frame-generation. Let us slowly go through all the changes included in the update.

Quality of Life Highlights

• Battle Retry prompt

Some of the in-game bosses may have been tough to beat, especially on higher difficulty levels, requiring multiple attempts to defeat them. Being respawned at a checkpoint and having to run back to the boss, while repeatedly skipping the same cutscene, could have been irritating. Forget reload screens. After dying to a boss (yes, that one), you can now hit “Retry” to return directly to the fight, skipping intervening checkpoints and cutscenes.

• Pictos menu Lumina costs

The Lumina cost display is now much better designed, allowing you to see the cost of already equipped pictos, as well as allowing for easier analysis and comprehension of your build.

• Autoplay dialogue and independent volume sliders

There is an optional autoplay option for all dialogues outside of cutscenes. It can be toggled in the settings. Moreover, the sound now has separate volume sliders in the menu, allowing you to adjust sound for combat and exploration independently. Everything from dialogues, through music, to special effects can be adjusted so you can enjoy the game as much as possible.

Combat & Accessibility Tweaks

Lune’s Thermal Transfer has been fixed—a huge relief given its importance in mid-game elemental rotations. It will no longer grant an extra turn without meeting the Stain consumption requirements.

The addition of colorblind-friendly Stain icons is equally welcome, allowing players with visual impairments to identify each element easily. Additionally, the immortality exploit caused by using the Second Chance picto combined with Healing Boon and Protecting Death, which disrupted the game balance, has now been removed.

Performance Upgrades

PC players feast: DLSS and XeSS now support Low-Latency Mode and Frame Generation. That means much better performance and gameplay experience thanks to smoother frame delivery and general visual polish across different levels. Yet, not only PC players are to celebrate, as some performance fixes of fog rendering have also been put into life on Steam Deck.

Achievement Fixes

There is good news for those who come after… to collect all achievements. Some of the trophies that were sometimes slightly broken will now automatically unlock on load/trigger once their requirements have already been met:

  • Expeditioner – reaching level 33
  • Trailbreaker – reaching level 66
  • Connoisseur – finding all 33 music records
  • Follow the Trail – finding all prior expeditions’ journals

If you are an achievement hunter, now you have no more excuses to collect all of them in Clair Obscur.

Conclusion

While the previous patch, which heavily focused on „Maelle nerf,” introduced some in-game balance changes, patch 1.4.0 offers many quality of life improvements that players greatly desired.

With fight retries, allowing players to reattempt battles with a click of a button, a much clearer lumina points design, and sharper visuals than ever, there is no better time to start the game and experience the story, whether for the first time or again. Commence Expeditioner! For those who come after!
