Night City is heading to the big screen. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with CD Projekt Red involved as a producer and longtime Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to the project.

The movie is still very early in development. No director, screenwriter, cast, production date, or release window has been announced, and we do not yet know whether Paramount plans to adapt V and Johnny Silverhand’s story directly or tell a new story somewhere else in the Cyberpunk universe.

What is confirmed: Paramount Pictures is developing the live-action film, CD Projekt Red will produce, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached as producer. The story, director, writer, cast, and release date remain unannounced.

What is Cyberpunk 2077 about?

Cyberpunk 2077 takes place in Night City, a sprawling future metropolis where corporations hold enormous power, cybernetic body modification is routine, and mercenaries make a living taking jobs that respectable citizens would rather not know about.

The game follows V, a customizable mercenary who takes part in a high-risk heist involving an experimental biochip called the Relic. When the job goes badly, V ends up carrying the digital personality of legendary rocker and anti-corporate rebel Johnny Silverhand, played in the game by Keanu Reeves.

From there, the story becomes a fight for survival wrapped around Night City’s gangs, megacorporations, personal relationships, and questions about identity, technology, mortality, and how much of yourself you can replace before you stop being you.

Paramount, CD Projekt Red, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura are involved

The film is being developed at Paramount Pictures, while Cyberpunk rights holder and game developer CD Projekt Red will produce alongside the studio.

CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed the new partnership, saying the company is excited to work with Paramount and that the two share creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise.

The first individual producer named is Lorenzo di Bonaventura. His long blockbuster résumé includes the Transformers film series and the G.I. Joe movies. He also produced the 2005 Doom adaptation, so this is far from his first encounter with a video game property.

Will it actually adapt V’s story?

That is the biggest unanswered question. Current reports only establish that the movie will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 version of the universe. They do not say that V, Johnny, Panam, Judy, Arasaka, or the events of the game’s campaign will be the focus.

There is already a good precedent for going in another direction. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners used the same Night City, corporations, gangs, technology, and broader setting while telling a standalone story with a new cast. Paramount could theoretically take the same approach on film.

That also means there is currently no confirmation that Keanu Reeves will return as Johnny Silverhand. No cast members have been announced.

What happened to the earlier Cyberpunk live-action project?

There is one wrinkle. Back in 2023, CD Projekt Red announced a separate live-action project with production company Anonymous Content, known for work including True Detective, Mr. Robot, The Revenant, and Spotlight. That project was supposed to tell a new story in the Cyberpunk 2077 world and was still described as being at an early stage in 2025.

Neither the new Paramount reports nor CD Projekt Red’s current comments explain whether the Paramount movie grew out of that earlier project, replaces it, or is a completely separate production. Until CD Projekt clarifies the connection, they should not be treated as the same project.

Night City keeps expanding beyond the game

The movie is another step in CD Projekt Red’s push to turn Cyberpunk into a broader entertainment franchise. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners already proved that Night City can support stories far away from V’s campaign, while Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives on Netflix on October 20, 2026 with another standalone cast and story.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is developing the next major Cyberpunk game, currently known as Cyberpunk 2. Whether Paramount’s movie follows familiar faces or introduces yet another group of doomed Night City residents, the setting is clearly becoming much bigger than one RPG.
