Last weekend, from July 3–7, 2025, Los Angeles hosted a major pop culture celebration — Anime Expo, bringing together fans of Japanese media from across the U.S. and around the world.
Alongside concerts, cosplay shows, and tons of fan activities, the event featured a special panel with a huge reveal for anime and gaming fans alike: the official confirmation of Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the acclaimed Cyberpunk 2077 anime.

The Edgerunners Phenomenon
Cyberpunk 2077 may have had a rocky launch, but the game quickly became a global hit. Built on the foundation of the classic pen-and-paper RPG, it reignited our fascination with a neon-drenched, brutal future — and the Cyberpunk franchise has since expanded beyond gaming, reaching into new media and drawing more attention to both the title and its developer, CD Projekt RED.
Books, highly rated comic books, and eventually an anime adaptation followed. In 2022, TRIGGER Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners hit the screen — a ten-episode series that didn’t follow V or Johnny Silverhand but instead introduced a new, street-level story about a young man named David trying to survive the harsh streets of Night City by becoming the eponymous Edgerunner.
The series was a critical and fan success, loved for its visual flair, emotional depth, and unapologetically violent style.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 Confirmed
Ever since the final episode dropped, one question echoed among fans: Will there be more? At first, the creators insisted Edgerunners was a one-season story — but fans never stopped hoping. And now, after years of speculation, it’s happening.
During Anime Expo 2025, a special panel brought together voice actors Emi Lo and Zach Aguilar, as well as director Hiroyuki Imaishi, to confirm the news. Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 is officially in production. A teaser was shown — but only behind closed doors, as it was deemed too violent for a public screening (which, let’s be honest, only made fans more excited).
The second season will once again be a 10-episode standalone tale — this time, a story of redemption and revenge. Directing duties are being handed over to Kai Ikarashi, while studio TRIGGER returns to animate the series in collaboration with Netflix and CD Projekt RED. Crucially, Bartosz Sztybor — the writer of many Cyberpunk comics and the showrunner of the first season — is also back at the helm.
Premiere and Reactions
The announcement immediately lit up the internet. Fans of the Cyberpunk franchise and lovers of dark, stylish anime flooded forums and social media with theories — speculating about the plot, characters, and especially the release date, which hasn’t yet been confirmed.
One thing’s for sure: Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated anime adaptations in years. With its promise of redemption and revenge, stunning visuals, and a creative team who knows exactly what makes this world tick, we’re in for another wild ride through Night City.
