Dragon Quest is a franchise that enjoys great popularity and recognition among players — especially in its developer’s home country, Japan.

Interestingly, the release date of the first game, May 27, has become something of a national celebration. Known as Dragon Quest Day, it’s marked by various events, co-op play sessions, and sales of game-related merchandise.

But Dragon Quest Day 2025 was truly special! This year’s celebration brought an exciting game announcement: the first two entries in the series, originally released in 1986 and 1987, are finally getting fully refreshed remakes built for modern times!

What Are Dragon Quest I & II About?

Although the first two games appeared on the launch timeline a few years before Dragon Quest III, they actually serve as direct sequels to the story told in that third title, forming the complete and beloved Erdrick Trilogy. It’s no surprise, then, that developers chose to announce the Dragon Quest Remake release only now — especially since Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake launched in November 2024.

In both Dragon Quest I and II, we take on the role of descendants of the legendary hero Erdrick. Our mission? Restore peace to the kingdom, defeat the forces of evil, and prove ourselves worthy of our heroic lineage.
