Ecco the Dolphin is officially coming back through a new project that combines remastered versions of the first two games with a brand-new modern entry.

TL;DR

Ecco the Dolphin is returning as Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, a package that includes remastered versions of the original two games and a new contemporary title led by creator Ed Annunziata and original team members.

A Long-Dormant Series Returns

After earlier teases from series creator Ed Annunziata, the franchise has now been formally announced as Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, a new package that includes remastered versions of the original Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time, plus a brand-new game described as a contemporary Ecco experience.

The new project is being developed by A&R Atelier, a California-based studio led by Annunziata. According to the announcement, the studio includes original members of the Ecco development team and is working on Ecco titles in partnership with Sega. The official Ecco website also says the team is currently working on new Ecco games and products, and that official information will be communicated there first.

A Revival That Has Been Building for a While

The return did not come entirely out of nowhere. In an Xbox Wire feature published on May 5, 2025, Annunziata said he and “the entire original team” would remaster the first two games before moving on to a new third game with more modern design sensibilities. That interview effectively confirmed the comeback well before this week’s fuller announcement.

This latest reveal gives the project a clearer shape. Reports say Ecco the Dolphin: Complete will include “all versions” of the first two games, although the wording around platform generations suggests there may still be questions about exactly which editions are included. The package is also set to add features such as achievements, leaderboards, speedrunning support, and cross-game meta quests linking the remasters with the new title.

What Has and Has Not Been Confirmed

The broad outline is now official: two remastered classics and one new game are in development. What still has not been confirmed is a release date, platform list, or the final scope of the new title beyond its modern framing. While earlier coverage focused on the countdown and revival teases, the official site and newer reporting stop short of locking in those details.

That makes this more of a formal comeback announcement than a full product rollout. Even so, it is a notable moment for a franchise that has been mostly dormant for decades. The original Ecco the Dolphin launched in 1992, followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time in 1994, and the series has had little visible momentum in the modern era until this revival effort.

Why It Matters

For Sega fans, the announcement adds Ecco to the growing list of older properties being revived or revisited in some form. For longtime Ecco players, the bigger draw may be that the project is being led by Annunziata and other original team members rather than being handed off entirely to a new studio. That does not guarantee the final result, but it does give the revival a stronger direct link to the games that built the series’ cult following in the first place.
