The smash hit game Elden Ring from 2022 won the hearts of fans of the dark fantasy genre.
For some time there were signs of a possible transfer of the game’s storyline to the big screen, but only now have we received confirmation – Elden Ring will live to see a film version!
The director will be Alex Garland, known for such films as Civil War and Ex Machina. Respected studio A24 is in charge of production. Significantly, lore co-author George R.R. Martin is reportedly involved in co-producing the film, which may influence its plot and bring depth to the movie universe. All the info was announced on Bandai Namco Elden Ring Website.
What the Story Might Include
And what about the movie’s plot? We don’t know much yet, but given the Elden Ring story, we’re expecting something epic.
In Elden Ring, the player takes on the role of Tarnished, who returns to the dark land of Lands Between. The once powerful kingdom, based on the magic of Elden Ring, has been plunged into chaos by wars between great demigods. Tarnished wishes to restore peace to the Lands Between and become Elden Lord.
Of course, as with many movie adaptations, it is not known at this point whether the film’s plot will follow that of the game or whether it will be a completely different story, merely using themes familiar from Elden Ring.
Expected visual style
Both the director profile and producer’s distinctive style suggest that A24 Elden Ring film will be a mix of fantasy and action elements. The expected visual style is a dark, gloomy and mysterious aesthetic, well reflecting the atmosphere of the Lands Between. We can also expect spectacular fight scenes, which are a central element of the game – and also the use of CGI in the creation of monsters or magic is likely.
Studio A24 is also known for its unusual and peculiar productions, such as Midsommar, so you can expect a lot of symbolism, horror elements or “strangeness” characteristic of their style.
Community reaction
How did Elden Ring’s fans react to the exciting news? Well, opinions are mixed. Skeptics have voiced concerns that live-action movie adaptations are often unsuccessful. Many also fear poor casting choices, so they’re not expecting much from the film.
Many fans, however, are optimistic about the involvement of Alex Garland and studio A24, expressing hope that the film could be a success.
Gaming editor Christopher Dring, in an interview with the BBC, noted that Hollywood increasingly sees video games as source material for films, which is slowly becoming a clear trend. He added, however, that many adaptations of popular games end up failing – even despite the presence of well-known names in the cast (read more here).
