The Paris Olympic bid committee is considering the inclusion of esport as an official medalled competition at the Summer Olympic Games in 2024. It’s all pretty vague but there is at least a willingness on the part of the committee to discuss a possible merge between the virtual and real.
Tony Estanguet, the co-president of the above-mentioned committee, said that there will be talks between the International Olympic Committee and representatives of the esport world to forge some sort of understanding as to what drives the fairly young community.
“We have to look at it because we can’t say, ‘It’s not us. It’s not about Olympics.’ The youth, yes they are interested in esport and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges.”
Esports have had their small showcase in Rio last year during the Olympic Games, and the Asian Olympic Committee announced that the 2022 Asian Games will feature medalled esport competitions. The 2024 Olympics program will be decided in 2020 after the Summer Games in Tokyo so there is still a lot of time to find that “bridge”.
