Final Fantasy IX Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Merch, Books, and Hopes for a Remake
It’s been 25 years since the release of Final Fantasy 9 – a game that truly brought the series back to its medieval fantasy roots. Like early installments in the series, the title follows the adventures of widely beloved heroes – in this case, Vivi and Zidane – as they make friends and strive to save the day.

To celebrate this year’s Final Fantasy 9 anniversary, the publisher prepared a website where you can revisit those nostalgic journeys and grab some exclusive merch – plushies, figures, bags, and more! As if that wasn’t enough, the FFIX Picture Book, written by Kazuhiko Aoki and illustrated by Toshiyuki Itahana, will be released in English May 19, 2026. Brace yourselves, as it’s an absolutely adorable and touching tale about Vivi and Grandpa Quan, telling the story of their days together before Vivi’s epic adventure!
The surprises keep coming – thanks to a Final Fantasy crossover with two mobile games available in Asia – Emberstoria and Sengoku Ixa – fans can now enjoy the presence of their favorite FF 9 characters in these titles. And if you want to experience the classic game’s nostalgic vibe right away, check out the tribute video released by Square Enix, which brings back all the most cherished memories from the very first second.
Despite all this news, we still don’t know if the FFIX remake rumors will come true later this year, as the company has yet to confirm the release of the highly anticipated game. One thing is for sure – there will be no better time to announce it than the 25th anniversary of the globally beloved title. And even if we won’t get to enjoy the remake anytime soon, the animated series announced four years ago could serve as an exciting consolation prize!
