As the first massive surprise hit of 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 made some waves, and it seems that surf’s still up, as developers keep hinting at following up on that refreshingly complete title.

In a new interview with MrMattyPlays on Youtube, Clair Obscur’s director Guillaume Broche talked and teased a little bit about what’s coming, and good news: it’s not a Gommage, quite the opposite, although it’s far too early for specifics.

What’s the Future of Clair Obscure?

First of all, it seems reasonable to expect a DLC of some format, as Mr. Broche says the studio “may be cooking” in response to a question about post-launch content.

It’s anybody’s guess what that might be, thankfully the map has a few places that would be fun to explore in a larger capacity, and some empty-ish spots where new stuff could be located.

On a larger scale, there is some consideration for a possible future of the title, with Broche confirming that the follow-up could happen, and that the franchise is called “Clair Obscur”, with Expedition 33 being just one of the stories told within it.

E33 is not where the franchise ends, even if it’s too early to announce anything solid. Which makes sense, Sandfall Interactive is a small studio, and they seem content to operate at the size they have, so cooking can take a long time. If the result is something as remarkable as Expedition 33, the patience will be well rewarded. We probably shouldn’t expect a direct sequel, but the world presented in COE33 seems wide enough to accommodate a few unconnected stories with ease. Or maybe it’ll be a new world entirely, in the mode of Final Fantasy? We just don’t know yet.

If you haven’t tried Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 yet, do yourself a big favor and give it a shot, especially if you enjoy emotional and dramatic storytelling, turn-based combat, and tweaking your builds and team composition to find interesting synergies. It’s absolutely a GOTY contender, in the best ways possible. Whatever stuff people at Sandfall have cooking, it’s bound to be interesting as well.
