Id Software has kicked off QuakeCon with an unexpected treat for retro gamers: the surprise release of an enhanced Heretic Hexen bundle, complete with cross-platform multiplayer and mod support.

Here’s everything you need to know about these classic fantasy shooters getting a modern upgrade!

Remember last year’s surprise launch of DOOM and DOOM II? Well, id Software and Nightdive Studios have surprised fans of retro games once again by releasing remastered versions of classic fantasy shooters Heretic and Hexen in one enhanced bundle! That leaves us with one question – what’s inside?

id Software Surprises QuakeCon with Enhanced Heretic Hexen Bundle

Except for being now available in a remastered version on modern platforms, the brand-new bundle includes three classic titles – Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, and the Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel expansion. As if that weren’t enough, the developers have enriched this iconic experience with two new original-inspired episodes – Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur – adding up to 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps!

The bundle launched on August 7 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. In addition to being now available on these platforms, it also offers 4K resolution support, up to 120 FPS, and a revamped Tome of Power soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult. Players can also enjoy cross-platform multiplayer, mod support, controller support, bug fixes, and a game balance toggle. The developers haven’t forgotten about accessibility features, including groundbreaking improvements such as text-to-speech and enhanced legibility. Overall, the bundle finally brings these titles to a new generation of players!

The compilation is currently available on Steam and GOG for $15, which means that players craving a remastered version of this legendary classic can discover its content for a truly modest price. Furthermore, those who already own any of the three originals will receive access to the upgrade for free. On top of that, they can enjoy these iconic video games however they like – playing them in their original or remastered form.
