Horizon Hunters Gathering is reportedly undergoing a major reboot, with Guerrilla Games moving away from its planned live-service structure following negative feedback from private playtests.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the new plan is to reduce the game’s scope and turn it into a more traditional cooperative multiplayer title with a stronger story component.

Horizon Hunters Gathering may be dropping live service

The report claims Guerrilla has been working on a reboot of Horizon Hunters Gathering since June. The most significant change would be the removal of its live-service component.

Instead, the project is reportedly being reshaped into a smaller-scale cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode. The game has not been cancelled, but its future is apparently dependent on an internal milestone later this year.

Hunters Gathering was announced in February 2026 as a three-player co-op action game for PS5 and PC. Guerrilla originally described it as a replayable hunting experience built around different Hunters, character builds, cooperative machine battles, a social hub, and a narrative designed to continue beyond launch.

Player feedback appears to be driving the reboot

Guerrilla has already held multiple closed playtests. Following the first test in February, the studio publicly said it was making improvements based on player feedback before holding another test in May.

The latest report goes considerably further. Poor feedback from private testing is said to have contributed to the decision to rethink the game’s overall direction rather than simply adjust individual mechanics.

It is important to stress that Sony and Guerrilla have not officially announced the reported reboot. For now, the move away from live service should be treated as a report rather than a confirmed change to the game.

What happens next?

According to the report, Guerrilla has until December to show PlayStation executives the next major version of the project. Some developers are also reportedly being reassigned elsewhere.

If the reboot goes ahead, Hunters Gathering could end up looking quite different from the game announced earlier this year. The core idea of hunting Horizon’s machines with other players appears to remain, but the long-term live-service structure may no longer be part of the plan.
