Square Enix exceeded our expectations at D23. The Disney Entertainment Showcase panel whet our appetite, revealing Coco as the first confirmed Disney world and finally locking in the game’s release window. In between the panels, Disney also announced a new Kingdom Hearts animated series.

Finally, the Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts panel gave us an extended trailer that shed light on the game’s story and gameplay mechanics.

The marketing cycle is officially underway, and the wait for Kingdom Hearts IV is much shorter than we anticipated. The game is coming in late 2027.

Kingdom Hearts Animated Series – Facts and Theory About the Protagonist

Kingdom Hearts fans have waited over 20 years to see the series properly adapted into an animated show. A pilot was produced in 2003, but it only resurfaced a few years ago. Now, we’re finally getting a full production created in cooperation with Square Enix and Tetsuya Nomura himself.

KINGDOM HEARTS IV - Extended D23 2026 Coco Trailer

The series will follow a new storyline, with original characters created specifically for this project. Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis commented on the show:

“Our new series will be unmistakably ‘Kingdom Hearts,’ while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”

After the announcement, Nomura released a statement, hinting at the plot in his unique way:

“I can’t say much right now, but the one hint is the single piece of key art that’s been revealed. Please let your imaginations run wild while you await further updates.”

Fans have developed a theory suggesting that the key art features Helgi, an upperclassman from Dark Road. This speculation is based solely on clothing details, so take it with a grain of salt.

It does, however, open up a whole new discussion. If Helgi really is a series protagonist, what will be the timeline? Will it take place before the events of Dark Road? Will it focus on their aftermath and explore Quadratum – the world where the dead characters wind up? Or will it fill the plot hole left by the cancellation of Missing Link?

Kingdom Hearts IV Trailer – Coco World, New Playable Characters, Explorable Scala ad Caelum

The extended trailer provided plenty of new details about the game, and the discussion panel shared even more.

Coco is the first confirmed Disney world and probably one of the first we’ll visit. The visuals are breathtaking, once again showing how faithfully Kingdom Hearts recreates Disney’s worlds.

Turns out, Sora will not be the only playable character. During the showcase, we learned that Donald and Goofy will be playable for the first time in a mainline game; previously, they were selectable in 358/2 Days’ multiplayer. King Mickey will also get his extended sections.

We also got a glimpse into the Scala ad Caelum sections. According to the developers, these Mickey segments will play very differently from Sora’s, focusing on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than combat.

Quadratum also got its time in the spotlight, revealing more about the main storyline and confirming some theories. We now know that Sora’s companions are Vali and Sigurd, characters originating from the mobile titles.

Sora’s friends will also join him much sooner than we anticipated – we can see Donald and Goofy arriving in the Coco world, while Riku makes his glorious entrance in Quadratum.

During the discussion panel, the devs confirmed that the late-2027 release window is locked in; the game will not be delayed. If we get a physical release, it will be one of the last PS5 games released on disc.

Other notable information provided by Kingdom Hearts IV co-director Tai Yasue and Tetsuya Nomura includes:

  • The Disney villains will play a major role, and Maleficent is one of the main characters.
  • Quadratum is one of the biggest worlds created for the franchise, with the developers aiming to faithfully recreate the streets of Tokyo.
  • Due to the scale of Quadratum, traversal will be enhanced with new movement abilities.
  • Kingdom Hearts IV will include a world Nomura always wanted to bring into the series.
