Good news for competitive Marathon players. The testing phase of the new Ranked mode begins this weekend, and Bungie is actively looking for player feedback.

This is your chance to jump into a skill-based PvP environment, test your builds, and start climbing the ladder from day one.

TL;DR – Marathon Ranked Mode
  • Beta start: March 21
  • Mode type: PvPvE ranked extraction
  • Requirement: Runner Level 25+
  • Key system: Holotags (risk vs reward)
  • Season duration: Weekend-only test

Marathon Ranked Mode in a Nutshell

The newly introduced Ranked mode is built around competitive PvPvE gameplay, where squads face off against each other while managing survival, extraction, and loot.

Your goal is simple: outplay other teams, extract successfully, and earn ranked points. The better your performance, the faster you climb.

  • Skill-based matchmaking
  • Rank progression system
  • Exclusive seasonal rewards
  • High-risk, high-reward gameplay loop
Key Idea: Ranked is designed to reward consistency, decision-making, and team coordination—not just raw aim.

Marathon Ranks Explained

The ranking system is structured to group players by skill level, ensuring fair and competitive matches.

RankTier System
BronzeIII → I
SilverIII → I
GoldIII → I
PlatinumIII → I
DiamondIII → I
PinnacleTop tier

Each rank (except Pinnacle) has three divisions, meaning steady progression and plenty of room to improve.

Ranked Mode Requirements and Restrictions

Before jumping in, you’ll need to meet a few conditions:

  • Runner Level 25+
  • Meet minimum gear ante value
  • Bring at least one Holotag

Ranked is available only on weekends and rotates maps between:

  • Perimeter
  • Dire Marsh
  • Outpost
Warning: Solo players can be matched against full squads—team up if you want better odds.

Marathon Holotag System

The Holotag system is the core of Ranked progression—and risk.

You must bring a Holotag into every Ranked run. It determines how many rank points you can gain—or lose.

  • Low Stakes: Bronze, Silver, Gold
  • High Stakes: Platinum, Diamond, Pinnacle

You can obtain Holotags by:

  • Buying them in the Armory
  • Looting them from defeated players
Risk vs Reward: Higher-tier Holotags increase difficulty—but massively boost potential rank gains.

If you fail to extract with enough score, you gain no rank points—making every run a calculated gamble.

Marathon Rewards System and Seasonal Progression

Ranked isn’t just about climbing—it’s also about earning exclusive seasonal rewards.

  • You receive a Ranked emblem based on your highest rank
  • Each rank-up grants loot packages and keys
  • Rewards are based on highest achieved rank, not final rank

Ranked Mode Season 1 – Launch Date and Duration

Season 1 begins: March 21 at 10:00 a.m. PT

Ends: March 24 at 10:00 a.m. PT

This first season acts as a beta test phase, allowing Bungie to gather feedback and refine the experience.

Good to know: Ranked will return every weekend—so you’ll have plenty of chances to climb.

Final Thoughts

Marathon’s Ranked mode looks like a serious step toward competitive longevity.

With Holotags introducing real stakes and seasonal rewards pushing progression, Bungie is clearly aiming to build a high-risk, high-skill PvP ecosystem.

Now the real question is: are you ready to risk your gear and climb the ladder?
