This indie roguelike just dropped on Steam and is absolutely crushing it, hitting over 21,000 concurrent players at its all-time peak just days after release, completely smashing expectations.

Seriously, who saw this coming? It’s the kind of surprise hit that spreads fast when the game actually delivers.

Development: The Bonk Heard ‘Round the World

The official launch date for this gem was September 18, 2025. Fun fact is the developer, known as Vedinad, was told by basically everyone to wait. Why? Because September’s release calendar is absolutely stacked with heavy hitters like Hollow Knight Silksong, Borderlands 4, and Hades 2. Releasing alongside those could be a risky move.

Vedinad didn’t care. He acknowledged the warnings: “Everyone has been warning me not to launch my game today, because it launches in the middle of other massive games”, but his response was: “I don’t care, boom, Megabonk is out now“. Not subtle, but clearly effective.

Right now, there are 10,350 players in-game, with the 24-hour and all-time peak hitting 21,068. Community reviews are glowing, sitting at 91% positive from over 2,000 reviews. Earlier, it was even hitting 96%. Players are apparently loving it.

One player gave it a “10 out of 10, would bonk again.” Another, after nearly 16 hours of play, said the game was well worth the money: fun, bouncy, and incredibly satisfying when the action kicks off.

Megabonk: What You Should Know

So what is Megabonk, exactly? Imagine Vampire Survivors amped up and tossed into a 3D world that feels like Risk of Rain 2. It combines survival chaos with fluid movement and wide-open arenas.

The style grabs you immediately. There’s a skateboarding skeleton, a monkey in shades, and a ridiculous amount of flair. It doesn’t just look fun, it is fun. Beneath the cartoon edge, the systems go deep. You start with 20 characters and over 70 unique items, which means plenty of room for weird and powerful builds.

The pacing is really sharp. You gain speed fast, chain kills, and blast through mobs while discovering new combos. It’s a game that rewards experimentation and movement. Runs stay fresh thanks to the variety of unlocks and sheer chaos onscreen.

Context: Indie Success Against the Giants

There’s something satisfying about seeing a small team land a hit like this. We’ve seen it before with Balatro, and earlier with Hollow Knight before that blew up.

Launching during the same window as Hades 2 and Borderlands 4 could’ve gone badly. But Megabonk had something real behind it. Players started talking, streams picked it up and numbers climbed like crazy.

The launch sale probably helped too, as the game is 15% off on Steam until Thursday, October 2. After that, the price goes up.

Megabonk: Unexpected Hit

If this trajectory holds, Megabonk could be one of 2025’s biggest indie breakouts. The reviews are legit, the playerbase is growing, and the community’s already trading builds and high-score runs. Not bad for a game that launched in the middle of a fight between AAA titans.
