Developers Planning Multiple DLCs

According to comments from co-developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, the tactical roguelike will receive at least two DLCs over its lifetime. And if their early ideas are anything to go by, even the “small” expansion could be massive.

The team has already begun discussing future additions to the game, though development on the first expansion hasn’t officially started yet.

Even the “Small” DLC Could Be Huge

In fact, Glaiel suggested that the smaller DLC might end up being nearly a third the size of the base game, which is already packed with content and replayability.

Considering how much gameplay Mewgenics already offers, that would still represent a huge addition of new systems, enemies, and challenges.

Developers Want Player Feedback First

Because of the game’s enormous scope, the developers are deliberately taking their time before committing to the first expansion.

Rather than rushing into development, McMillen said the team wants to spend several months studying how players interact with the game and which systems resonate the most.

The idea is simple: let the community shape the DLC.

“We want to fully understand what people really like about the game before we start,” McMillen explained.

What Is Mewgenics?

Mewgenics launched on February 10, 2026 and quickly became a major indie success.

The game blends tactical RPG combat, roguelike structure, and a cat-breeding life simulation, allowing players to create increasingly strange feline lineages with different classes, mutations, and abilities.

With its deep systems and procedural adventures, the game already offers hundreds of hours of potential gameplay.

Developers estimate it could take around 200 hours to complete the main experience and up to 500 hours to fully explore everything the game has to offer.

Why Fans May Need to Wait

While details about the expansions remain scarce, the developers have hinted that new content could include additional classes, areas, and gameplay systems.

However, fans shouldn’t expect them anytime soon. Once development begins, McMillen estimates the first DLC alone could take about a year to complete, meaning players may not see it until 2027 or later.

That timeline may sound long, but it follows the philosophy behind Mewgenics itself. The project famously spent more than a decade in development after being cancelled and later revived, eventually launching as one of the most unusual roguelikes in years.

Given that history—and the sheer amount of content already in the base game—fans likely won’t mind waiting if the expansions live up to the developers’ ambitious plans.

And if a “small” DLC is already shaping up to be a third the size of the game, the future of Mewgenics could end up just as chaotic, weird, and content-packed as its feline-filled base adventure.
