Mortal Kombat 2 just dropped its first teaser, “Uncaged Fury,” and it’s totally wild. Karl Urban steps into the ring as Johnny Cage, and right out of the gate, it looks like the tone has shifted.
We’re getting less brooding, more wisecracks. Less blood opera, more 80s action movie flair.
Mortal Kombat 2 Teaser
The teaser is a straight-up homage to those over-the-top VHS trailers. Cage throws punches, lands kicks, and wrecks some goons, all after someone smashes his iconic sunglasses. It’s loud, flashy, and completely on-brand. Warner Bros. clearly isn’t shy about leaning into Cage’s over-the-top attitude. And honestly, Urban looks like a solid pick. Fans are already loving his take on Cage’s mix of cocky bravado and muscle-bound swagger.
Comedy Meets Kombat
Tone-wise, this isn’t a one-off gag. Ed Boon, the guy who created Mortal Kombat, confirmed it himself that Johnny Cage is the funniest guy in the film. Test screenings seem to back that up too. People who’ve seen early cuts say this sequel leans way harder into comedy than the 2021 movie did. Some are even comparing its crowd-pleaser energy to Avengers: Endgame.
Boon’s take? Simple. He loves what they’ve done with it. In his words: “These guys nailed it.”
Karl Urban Steps Into the Spotlight
This is the follow-up to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, but it’s not just a retread. The sequel’s adding new faces, and the most hyped one is Karl Urban as Johnny Cage. You’ve seen Urban as Billy Butcher in The Boys or Éomer in Lord of the Rings. Now he’s stepping into the tight pants and ego of Mortal Kombat’s most ridiculous action hero.
Cage has always been a nod to Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Warner Bros. is doubling down. They even made a fake IMDb page for Cage, listing “films” like:
• Hard to Cage
• Rebel Without a Cage
• Cool Hand Cage
They’re clearly having fun with it. There’s even a poster for Uncaged Fury — Cage mid-explosion, shades intact, helicopters spinning in the background. It’s peak Johnny.
What’s Coming in Mortal Kombat 2
Simon McQuoid is back in the director’s chair, with Jeremy Slater writing. The movie hits theaters on October 24, 2025, with an IMAX version for anyone who wants to see every punch in screen-shaking detail.
It’s not just Johnny, either. The full cast list is stacked:
- Kitana (Adeline Rudolph)
- Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee)
- Liu Kang (Ludi Lin)
- Quan Chi (Damon Herriman)
- Raiden (Tadanobu Asano)
- Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada)
Full Trailer Shows the Bigger Picture
Alongside the teaser, Warner Bros. just released the first full trailer. This one pulls back the curtain a bit more. We see Johnny Cage being transported by Raiden and Sonya Blade to the tournament grounds, where he squares off against Kitana.
The main trailer teases also a lot more characters: Shao Kahn, Baraka, Shang Tsung, Jax, Kano, Noob Saibot.
Mortal Kombat 2 is shaping up to be less gritty martial arts flick and more absurd, violent action-comedy. And that might be exactly what it needs.
