Five years after the first announcement, Netflix has officially greenlit its live-action Assassin’s Creed series, now helmed by Roberto Patino and David Wiener!

It’s a time of celebration for Assassin’s Creed fans, as Netflix has finally greenlit the live-action AC series. Although first announced five years ago, Netflix is officially ready to launch this long-awaited Ubisoft adaptation. What do we know, and when can we expect its release?

Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series Moves Forward With New Showrunners, Promises Story of Power and Vengeance

One of the most positive surprises about the official announcement is the selection of Emmy nominees Roberto Patino (DMZ, Sons of Anarchy, Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo, The Killing, Homecoming) as showrunners and executive producers of Netflix’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed. Considering their experience in previous productions, fans can feel quite hopeful about the high-quality level of the entire project!

The show aims to faithfully maintain the AC series themes, revolving around an ancient conflict between two opposing factions, one that seeks control over humanity, while the other fights for free will. As if that weren’t enough, Ubisoft will be actively involved in the series’ development!

As Margaret Boykin, executive producer and head of content at Ubisoft Film & Television, says, “We look forward to delivering an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin’s Creed, while introducing its unforgettable worlds and timeless themes to new audiences worldwide.”

Overcoming Development Challenges

The most inspiring part of this fantastic news is the promising approach the brand-new executive producers are taking to make Netflix Assassin’s Creed as engaging as possible. “Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story – about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith,” they say and add, “It is about power and violence and sex and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time. And it’s about what we stand to lose as a species when those connections break.”

It turns out that the Assassin’s Creed Netflix series was put on hold for a while due to occasional turbulence among the creators, as several designers joined and left the project over the years. Fortunately, everyone now seems finally ready to work on this long-awaited adaptation!

Which, by the way, isn’t the only one, as we already had a Michael Fassbender-starring movie in 2016. However, the production didn’t resonate with fans at the time, and the game series developer now says it has learned its lesson.

Assassin’s Creed Hexe Teaser

Which brings us to the origin of the whole topic: video games. The AC live-action show announcement arrives at an excellent time, as we’re just before the release of the first major expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Furthermore, the gaming community is eagerly awaiting the release dates of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remaster and the brand-new Assassin’s Creed Hexe – the latter of which may be the most fascinating installment yet! With all the buzz surrounding these releases, we must admit the company is doing its best to dominate the gaming (and now streaming) scene with its flagship series!

Anticipation Builds for Netflix’s New Adaptation

Considering Netflix’s past video game adaptations, such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it’s hard to say what we can expect from this brand-new project. Nevertheless, creators’ statements confirm that they aim to deliver a truly faithful reproduction of the globally beloved series. Although Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, we’ll certainly keep an eye on this exciting news!
