The time has come – a legendary classic role-playing game from 2006, Neverwinter Nights 2, is finally getting some well-deserved love. So, what’s the deal with Enhanced Edition for NWN 2?
D&D Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition
It took over two decades but it’s happening now and the fans can’t hold in the excitement – Neverwinter Nights 2 from Obsidian is about to return in a new, refreshed version, bringing some important improvements while preserving the spirit of the original game.
This revival should open the gates of Neverwinter to a whole new audience – too young to remember the original – while giving veteran players a chance to relive the official campaigns and dive into the many custom scenarios created by fellow fans of the NWN setting.
Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition is scheduled to be released on July 15.
Here’s a closer look at what we know about it.
Mod Support via Steam
Arguably, one of the most important features of the Enhanced Edition is native support for Steam Workshop mods. This means that you’ll be able to seamlessly interact with fan-made creations and enable your favorite mods with just a few clicks.
Making and sharing the mods with the community will also be much easier, encouraging players to try their hand at creating some custom modifications to alter the original experience and add spices and toppings of their own choice to it.
There is some concern regarding the availability of the mods on release; the original game is quite dated which means that, at the beginning, it may be difficult to find the mods you’re interested in on the Steam platform.
As time goes on, though, the public library of modifications for Neverwinter Nights 2 should get bigger, so make sure to check on it frequently.
Full Cross-Platform Support
Mod support is not where the new, shiny things end. Another important feature of the Enhanced Edition is full crossplay support, which means that you’ll be able to play with friends, regardless of the platform you’re all playing on.
Be it PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch, it doesn’t really matter – you can all play together, so there’s no need to worry about which platform you should get the game on. Just pick the one you’re the most comfortable with and join your party on a new adventure based on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 3.5.
Controller Support with New UI
Full controller support is also coming with the new edition, making the game very convenient to play while using a gamepad. Controllers will receive their own controller-specific user interface that was crafted exclusively with controllers in mind. For the first time, you will be able to fully enjoy NWN 2 on a big TV screen while chilling on the couch.
Better Camera, Enhanced Textures, and More
A variety of smaller but still super important features you can expect to find in the Enhanced Edition of Neverwinter Nights 2 include better camera controls, polished gameplay mechanics, and enhanced textures.
Even though the original game was commonly praised for the stories and gameplay possibilities, the controls and interface left a lot to be desired. This should be greatly improved now, making the experience much better in general. The improved textures should make the game look less dated but don’t expect a complete visual overhaul; part of the game’s charm was the visuals.
A Classic cRPG – Just Like the Original
Although the Enhanced Edition for NWN 2 brings some technical improvements and additions to the table, the game itself remains unchanged and provides mostly the same experience as the original game from 2006. This means that the spirit of Neverwinter Nights shines brighter than ever, allowing older players to relive the past while making the title more accessible to younger generations.
The Enhanced Edition will contain not only the original campaign but also all of the original expansions: Storm of Zehir, Mysteries of Westgate, and, of course, the fan-favorite story-wise, Mask of the Betrayer.
