One would’ve thought that the story of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is done and there won’t be any more expansions. As surprising as it sounds, according to some rumors, Polish devs may have more for us in the store.

The Witcher 3 Expansion Rumors

The rumors came from Polish podcasters, Boris and Rock, who claim to have collected enough evidence from different, independent sources, to say for certain that The Witcher 3 will get a new DLC.

It’s unknown when the expansion will be released but it may be as soon as 2026, and is being developed by Fool’s Theory – a studio that’s also working on the remake of the original Witcher video game.

It’s particularly surprising news if we consider that The Witcher 4 is already in the works and should come out within the next few years. Why would developers put any more thought and effort into a game that’s basically finished, especially when there’s a new one being worked on?

Well, there’s at least one good possible explanation for it.

What’s the Purpose of the New Witcher 3 DLC?

Even though all we’ve got is based on pure rumors and guesses, some speculate the new expansion to be a narrative DLC focused on quests and stories that will address some lore-related loose ends and tie Witcher 3 and 4 together for a more cohesive story experience.

This would make sense, especially considering that The Witcher 3 had different outcomes based on player decisions taken throughout the game.

The fate of certain characters will be drastically different, depending on your choices, so it would be nice to have something that would put all players on the same page story-wise before we all jump into Witcher 4. It’s especially important to clear some things up for Ciri, who’s supposed to be the main protagonist of the upcoming Witcher game.

But there’s more. The Witcher 3 is still considered by many the best RPG ever made and it’s still relatively popular. From a marketing point of view, making a new expansion doesn’t sound like a bad idea in and of itself; despite the vanilla game being 10 years old, it’s safe to assume that a lot of players would still absolutely buy and play a new expansion. In other words, it would probably still make a lot of money and be a commercial success.

So, here’s the thing: why not use this opportunity to build more hype for The Witcher 4? A new DLC could be used to promote the next game and encourage people to buy it, which would be a fantastic marketing move.

But then again, it’s all just rumors, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Previous Expansions: Masterful Quality

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received two massive DLCs in the past: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine[/productUrlLink’]. Both of them provided players with new several-hour long fantasy story arcs, new absolutely gorgeous places to visit, new charismatic characters to meet, and new equipment to use.

It was an example of how a proper DLC should look like; not just a new alternative skin for a character but a proper, full-fledged expansion that gives players tens of hours of entirely new and fresh content to experience.

Given CD Projekt Red’s reputation for high-quality work, it’s no surprise that rumors of a possible new expansion have sparked considerable excitement. People expect something of similar quality and scope but we’re advising to take a more cautiously optimistic outlook instead; if there’s indeed a new expansion planned for Witcher 3, it may be a much smaller and simpler one. It’s better to keep expectations modest and be pleasantly surprised than to anticipate the extraordinary and end up disappointed.

Third Expansion for The Witcher 3 – Release Date and Price

We don’t know exactly when the speculated DLC will be released but 2026 lies within the realm of possibilities. According to Boris and Rock, we should be getting cross-platform console mods for The Witcher 3 first, then the DLC, then The Witcher 4, and then a remake of the original Witcher.

As to what the expansion will cost, it’s also a big unknown. Depending on the goals of the DLC, it may be a small free update or it may cost several dollars. For reference, Blood and Wine was $20 on release.
