Hello Games is relentless in their efforts to make No Man’s Sky not just everything they’ve ever promised, but also, apparently, everything the genre itself has the capacity to promise.
The fresh update, dubbed “Voyagers”, released just yesterday, on August 27th, brought in a ton of features, and the most notable of them are modular, customizable ships with proper interiors. Which is huge, but also weirdly not the only thing in the game! Let’s go over some of the additions and changes, pulling from the blogpost on NMS’s official website.
Ship-shape
You know how you can assemble a new ship out of parts salvaged from crash sites and such? It’s fun, but these ships are not really places of their own. Now it changes, because you can also find parts for a new class of ship, the Corvette. They have several things going for them:
- they are much larger than your typical craft
- you have a huge degree of control over their design thanks to a build system easily comparable to the one you use for your bases
- they have full interiors, so you can step out of the pilot seat and go for a walk
- they have functional parts, such as a Refiner or a kitchen
- you can have friends on your ship, since they are multicrew-capable. A treat for multiplayer-enjoyers
- there are several different stylings for the habitation modules, plus a selection of smaller decorations and furnishings
- they can hover in-atmosphere and beam you down when the terrain isn’t suitable for landing
Honestly, this system alone feels huge and exciting, and the community is probably going to make some really impressive builds with it. It’s also nice that in addition to the planetside bases the game found a way to give ships more physical presence and usefulness as a legitimate living space of their own.
Some basic corvette parts are available for purchase with credits, but you can also find them in excavated storage containers during your regular exploration and salvaged from Derelict Freighters.
Space is a place
The new ship class also allows you to step outside for a space walk, experiencing the vastness of space around you… and appreciating the ship you’ve made without the pesky weather and gravity making it harder to see.
To that end, there’s a new style of Exosuit in town. Use the 5-piece Skyborn set to spice up your space fashion with a more classic astronaut-like appearance.
The ship interiority also means you get to just see the space through a window, if a full walk is not your fancy. Sure, you always could see it from the pilot seat, but it’s not quite the same feeling. Now you can set the new autopilot functionality to ferry you to your destination, while you sit back and enjoy stars passing by.
Oh, and yes, you can get out of the ship in atmosphere as well, if sky diving sounds like a fun thing to do. Just don’t forget that it’s not the fall that kills you, and use your jetpack to prevent the sudden stop at the end.
Visual upgrades
In addition to the new gameplay features, NMS also touched up things like lighting for the player character, enhanced the appearance of glass-like surfaces, enabled DLSS4 on PC, and improved visuals quality for PlayStation VR2.
Expedition and Twitch drops
To help players get into the new update, there is going to be a new Expedition, planned to run for six weeks, and it will reward completing it with some customization options, a ship cannon module for the Corvette, and a robotic companion.
What starts today, however, is a Twitch drop campaign, providing viewers of NMS streams with resources, spaceships, customization pieces etc. You can see the details on the dedicated page, alongside some simple instructions on how to link your NMS and Twitch Twitch accounts. Bonus points: it also enables cross-saving across platforms.
This news article is already lengthy, and doesn’t even cover everything in detail. No Man’s Sky 6.0: Voyagers is one hell of an update. Get on it, if you haven’t yet! The game is really loaded with content and gameplay.
