In a survival genre-shaking post on X, Markus Persson, better known as “Notch”, ran a quick survey with a predictable outcome.

It presented two options.

  • A game Notch is self-reportedly working on right now, a traditional roguelike in the vein of ADOM and nethack with shades of dungeon crawlers such as the Eye of the Beholder.
  • A successor to Minecraft

The result it clear: the children yearn for the mines. The Minecraft successor received an overwhelming majority of votes, which is bad news for fans of old-school dungeon crawling. However, it is also great news for people who have lost all hope Microsoft, current owner of Minecraft, would make an official sequel.

Of course, just because the option won and that Notch seems genuine about his willingness to make the game, and he reiterated that yes, he “basically announced minecraft 2” (original capitalization),  the delivery might be years away, so keep your hopes up, but on a slow burn.

Thankfully, Minecraft as it stands now should easily be able to sustain you until either a sequel or Notch’s spiritual successor arrives.
