The Peak devs, in the latest patch, included a note saying “Hi modders <3” – a response to a method of bypassing the server’s player limit.

Rather than stopping players from going beyond the set limit, the developers supported their efforts by fixing a bug that only affected those using one of the most downloaded Peak game mods, the PeakUnlimited.

Lately, modding has become widely accepted, players don’t just extend games’ longevity by adding new elements to the gameplay – they often contribute to a title’s commercial success.

A community-driven hit

The patch dropped not long after Peak’s massive launch, with the game selling over 2 million copies in just 9 days. That kind of success speaks not just to the game itself, but to the strength of its player community. A big part of Peak’s momentum comes from modding support – the developers have made it clear from the start that players are free to shape the game in their own way.

Landfall and Aggro Crab offered gameplay for up to four people in a team, but players quickly figured out how to get around the co-op limit using the tools available on Thunderstore, a mod hosting platform. The PeakUnlimited mod quickly became popular among fans, especially since only the host needs to install it for the whole group to benefit. It worked surprisingly well for something technically “breaking the rules”: extra marshmallow portions would even spawn at the campfire for the unexpected guests.

Like they planned it all along

It almost felt like the devs had planned it from the start, letting players discover how to increase the lobby size on their own. “The end screen will no longer break hopefully in modded lobbies of greater than 4 players. Hi modders <3” – the patch notes stated.

A similar situation happened before, but this time, the developers surprised everyone. In 2024, Content Warning – a multiplayer game also developed by Landfall – was so crowded with players that, after the co-op limit was bypassed, the devs couldn’t patch it due to rising server costs. The no-limit mod that allowed players to invite as many friends as they wanted was eventually disabled.

Modders greeted with a heart

What makes the Peak stand out is not just its core gameplay, but how it grows with its community. By embracing modders instead of fighting them, the devs have created a space where creativity thrives, and the game becomes more than what was originally released.
