Deadfire when ready.

With still a bit over a month left until Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire’s delayed release, Obsidian in their infinite wisdom has graced us with a feature trailer for the game.

Things flip by fast, but here are some of the interesting thigns seen there:

  • expanded skill system – instead of the first game’s paltry six skills, now there are apparently 16, divided into active like athletics or mechanics, and passive, like various lore skills
  • much-discussed ship captaincy, including setting the course, managing the crew and equipment, playing out sea battles
  • vastly improved graphics in comparison to the first game, with more dynamic lighting, better animations, and fewer static environments (swaying palm trees!)
  • proper dungeons – a good dungeon crawl is always welcome, and the trailer suggests there will be some
  • 5-person team – as opposed to the first game’s 6, and Tyranny’s 4. A curious decision, but maybe it will help to reduce the clutter during combat

Over all the trailer does a good job summing op the key features presented to Kickstarter backers and fans over the course of development and has a good chance of catching the interest of people who haven’t been following the project before.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire launches on May 8th for Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs.
