Rockstar has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption and its expansion Undead Nightmare are getting native releases on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, Android, and Netflix. The release date is set for December 2.

This news follows recent ESRB ratings that hinted at an updated version of the game. With that speculation now confirmed, Rockstar has also revealed that existing owners will be able to upgrade to the enhanced edition at no extra cost. Progress will carry over, which makes the transition even smoother for returning players.

RDR Enhanced Version: What’s New

This goes well beyond a basic compatibility patch. Rockstar’s actually putting in the work to bring proper upgrades for today’s systems.

PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the game runs at 60 frames per second with 4K resolution and HDR. Image quality is sharper, giving the world a look more in line with Red Dead Redemption 2. These upgrades make the game feel far more modern without changing the original experience.

Nintendo Switch 2

The Switch 2 version also targets 60 frames per second and supports DLSS upscaling for clearer visuals on its smaller screen. HDR is included, and mouse input is supported, which is uncommon for a handheld console.

Mobile and Netflix

iOS and Android versions come with mobile-friendly touch controls. The game is fully playable with a standard Netflix subscription without any extra costs.

Rockstar Games Update

The original launched in 2010 for PS3 and Xbox 360. Later re-releases and backward-compatible versions worked, but they were still running outdated code.

This re-release finally brings native support for modern platforms. You get full 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and performance that matches today’s expectations. If you’ve played it before, this is the version you wanted all along. If you’re new, it’s the best way to experience a Rockstar classic without dealing with outdated tech.

Owners of the previous PS4, Xbox One, or Switch versions can upgrade for free. Save data transfers are supported across platforms within the same console family.

A Strategic Move Ahead of GTA 6

With Grand Theft Auto 6 targeting a November 2026 launch, Rockstar has a long stretch to keep players engaged. Bringing Red Dead Redemption to modern systems gives them a strong title to fill that space. It keeps fans invested and offers both returning and new players something fun to spend time with.

What to Expect If You’re New

If you missed the original, Red Dead Redemption throws you into a third-person open world at the edge of the American frontier’s last days. You step into the boots of John Marston, a former outlaw trying to walk a straighter path, by tracking down the people he used to ride with. It’s not just about shootouts and horseback rides. The game digs into themes like redemption, regret, and what it really costs to leave a violent life behind.

What This Says About Rockstar

Rockstar’s approach to its older games is starting to change. Instead of leaving classics stuck on old consoles or re-releasing them with barely any improvements, they’re putting in the effort to deliver updates that matter. The goal looks clear: give these games enough polish and support to stand alongside today’s releases without feeling out of place.
