This month, the RimWorld: Odyssey DLC was released, bringing new features to the fan-favourite colony sim, including new challenges, diverse biomes, and, most importantly, a fully mobile base, Gravship.
RimWorld, primarily developed by Tynan Sylvester, offers a refreshing take on gameplay. The new Odyssey DLC launched alongside the RimWorld 1.6 update. Keep reading and see what’s inside!
What’s new in the Odyssey DLC
With the new possibilities the DLC brings, you can fly across planets due to mobile base-building. From now on, it’s possible to own a ship, or more precisely, to construct one from scratch and explore distant locations.
Once you have it, a new journey opens – you will see an even more diverse world with new biomes: glacial plains, lava fields and more, all with exotic wildlife never seen before. With the new base comes new challenges – to reach orbit, you’ll need to ensure a constant supply of oxygen and heat to stay safe. Besides flying home, there are other features worth highlighting. A gold-plated charge rifle can enhance your gear and strike fear into your enemies during unexpected raids.
The opportunities offered by the Odyssey DLC attracted renewed interest from gamers. On the day of its release, SteamDB stats recorded a spike of 95,000 concurrent players. This marked the highest player increase since the start of the year.
Where it all began
The game experienced its first glory days seven years ago and was already welcomed with open arms by the gaming community. A lot of freedom to build your own place, a non-linear story, plenty of room and ways to expand your base made it similar to games like Oxygen Not Included, Clanfolk, Norland, and Dwarf Fortress.
A few years after launch, the game got its first DLC – RimWorld – Royalty – introducing a noble class, psychic powers, and an empire faction. Not long ago, the second one dropped: RimWorld – Ideology, keeping fans far from bored. Over the next few years, three more expansions followed: RimWorld – Biotech, RimWorld – Anomaly, and the latest – the titular Odyssey. Almost every DLC came with a fresh update that expanded the core formula, keeping the community hooked for the long run.
Conclusion
Odyssey shows that RimWorld still has plenty of fuel in the tank. Now, it offers even more challenge, weirdness, and more stories to lose yourself in. After all these years, it’s still got that magic.
