Tony Montana is officially making a comeback. For years, PC gamers have been asking for a proper re-release of the 2006 classic Scarface: The World Is Yours, and now it’s happening (sort of).

Hong Kong-based publisher EC Digital Entertainment announced that they are bringing the open-world action-adventure title back to PC through both Steam and the Epic Games Store. The news sounds great, but the announcement quickly turned messy.

The Official Re-Up and Technical Drama

The publisher announced the game is heading to Steam and the Epic Games Store. It briefly went live on Epic for $29.99, but EC said that was a backend mistake. Steam is still planned, and the store page will be updated before launch.

The game will include an optional AI-upscaled graphics mode as free DLC. You’ll be able to switch between the original visuals and the updated version anytime, which could be a decent middle ground for both preservationists and new players.

Now the problem. Twitter user @silent, known for creating SilentPatch for the original PC release, discovered that the version listed on the Epic Games Store appeared to include his mod as well as another one called Fusion Fix. Neither modder was contacted. Their work was used in the commercial release without permission.

EC Digital admitted they acted too fast, pulled the game from Epic, and said they’re now in talks with modders and partners. Licensing questions followed. Universal owns the Scarface IP, and it’s still unclear whether this re-release has full legal backing.

Say Hello To My Little Gameplay Features

Put the store confusion aside for a moment. Here is why this game still matters.

Scarface: The World Is Yours picks up after Tony survives Sosa’s betrayal. He loses everything: his mansion, his money, his reputation. The game is about rebuilding. It is a third-person open-world action game that drops you into Miami and nearby islands. You fight, deal, intimidate, and reclaim your criminal empire.

Combat is brutal and theatrical. You can insult enemies as you shoot them. The signature mechanic is Blind Rage Mode. When Tony takes enough damage or gets angry enough, he enters a temporary rage state. During this mode, he does more damage and gains health with every kill.

Scarface Re-Release PC: The Verdict (For Now)

This re-release is part of the larger trend of reviving older titles for new hardware. Games like Oblivion have already shown how strong this nostalgia wave can be when handled with care. EC Digital aimed to enter that space with an affordable price and optional AI upgrades.

However, once the mod drama surfaced, the conversation shifted. Universal Pictures owns the Scarface license. After the controversy broke, Gematsu reached out to Universal to confirm whether this release was fully authorized. That question remains unanswered publicly.

EC Digital’s latest update says they are reviewing the situation. The project is now on hold. Store pages have been hidden. Discussions with partners, licensors, and modders are ongoing. The company says it will share more information if and when the game is ready to return.

Until then, Tony’s comeback is stuck in limbo. If EC Digital manages to resolve the licensing issues and gives proper credit and compensation to the modders, Scarface might still get its second life on PC. For now, all we have is a brief glimpse and a lot of questions.
