One of Shadow of Mordor’s biggest allures was the Nemesis system which made fighting bad guys in the game not just a tick on sword marking another death.

The whole trick was to make you care about your environment and make the enemies characteristic enough so you would actually give a damn about their motivations and distinctions between them.
