If the Sea of Thieves doesn’t satisfy your craving for nautical adventures, you’re in for a treat, because the upcoming Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire (launching on April 3rd) is going to have a rather unique method of resolving maritime conflicts.
It would be best to give the voice to the developers themselves, especially since the video is amazing.
In essence, the ship combat is going to rely on the vignettes the previous game used to resolve certain environmental challenges or provide a thematic equivalent of a QTE. So in this solution, you’ll need to manage several things: course, speed, cannon ammo etc. and judging by this limited presentation, the interface does a pretty good job presenting all of it in a clear way.
