Previous record57,000 concurrent players (Slay the Spire)

Early Access Launch and Player Surge

Slay the Spire 2 attracted players in an instant. Purchases temporarily fell into limbo as the surge in traffic stalled store pages.

The game immediately became a hit, breaking the previous installment’s record of 57,000 concurrent players in just half an hour. Right now, it is dominating the charts with over 280,000 players.

That’s more than triple the concurrent player count of Marathon at the time, an impressive result for an indie roguelike deckbuilder.

Why Slay the Spire 2 is so Highly Anticipated

The original Slay the Spire is widely considered one of the most influential deckbuilding roguelikes ever released. The sequel’s anticipation has been compared to Hollow Knight: Silksong, and based on the Steam performance during the release, a comparison that no longer seems far-fetched.

The core gameplay revolves around building powerful decks full of synergies, fighting enemies in turn-based combat, and making strategic decisions about the path you take. It’s one of those titles that will force you to sharpen your math skills, just like Balatro.

Community and Developer Reactions

The indie community has been buzzing with excitement, slightly cooled down thanks to Steam’s technical difficulties.

Some developers even joked about rearranging their own release schedules to avoid competing with the sequel’s launch window. The developer behind this week’s surprisingly excellent new RPG wrote:

“The best part about moving the release date of Esoteric Ebb from 5th -> 3rd is that I can play Slay the Spire 2 all evening now. (The second best part was that Steam didn’t crash for half an hour on the 3rd).”

Many other developers rushed their game or delayed its release in order to avoid colliding with Slay the Spire 2. For good reason, as it turns out.

Pricing and Discounts

The game normally costs $25, but owners of the original Slay the Spire can receive a loyalty discount, reducing the price to $22.50. For new players interested in the series, there’s also a bundle available for $28.

Despite the brief storefront issues, the blockbuster launch and massive player numbers suggest Slay the Spire 2 could become one of Steam’s biggest indie successes of the year.

The game will continue to evolve throughout Early Access with updates and player feedback. A full release is planned for 1 to 2 years from now.
