The Simpsons: Hit & Run has suddenly returned to the conversation after Matt Groening appeared to have let something slip during D23 2026.

During a Simpsons panel, Groening was asked whether there would ever be another Hit & Run game. His answer immediately drew attention: “I think the original game is coming back in some form.” Current Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman then quickly added, “or not.”

Matt Groening may have said more than intended

The exchange was brief, one might say: a hit & run, but it was enough to reignite discussion around the 2003 cult favorite. Groening’s wording referred specifically to the original game, not a sequel, while Selman’s immediate response made the moment feel notably less like a formal announcement and more like an off-the-cuff comment.

For now, that is all that can be stated with confidence. No rerelease, remaster, remake, or sequel was officially announced during the panel, and no release window or platform details were provided.

Hit & Run remains a fan favorite

The original The Simpsons: Hit & Run launched in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Windows PC. Developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Vivendi Universal Games, it became one of the most fondly remembered Simpsons games thanks to its open-area driving, missions, collectibles, humor, and extensive use of the show’s cast and locations.

Despite that popularity, it has never received an official modern rerelease, which is why even a vague comment from Groening was enough to attract so much attention.

For now, this casual remark is the extent of what’s going on.
