Squadron 42 has been pushed out of 2026 and into the second quarter of 2027. Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts says one of the main reasons is simple: the studio does not want its long-awaited single-player sci-fi campaign launching anywhere near the attention surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI.

Cloud Imperium wants to stay clear of GTA 6

Squadron 42 had previously been targeting Q4 2026, around Cloud Imperium’s annual Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. Roberts now says the studio has looked at the available release windows and settled on Q2 2027 instead.

The concern is not direct platform competition. GTA 6 is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Squadron 42 is a PC title. The issue is visibility. Roberts expects gaming outlets, streamers, and other creators to devote so much attention to Rockstar’s launch that other major games released around the same period would struggle to get comparable coverage.

He described the prospect as launching Squadron 42 into the “attention buzz saw of GTA6”, adding that Cloud Imperium has invested more than a decade into the project and wants its release to have room to breathe.

How is Squadron 42 connected to Star Citizen?

Squadron 42 is the single-player, story-driven side of the wider Star Citizen project. Both games share the same universe and technology, but they serve different purposes. Star Citizen is the persistent online sandbox, while Squadron 42 is a cinematic campaign with a defined military storyline.

Cloud Imperium originally treated them as two parts of the same larger game before separating their packages commercially. The company still describes them as connected experiences within the same universe, with Squadron 42 accessed through the same broader Star Citizen ecosystem.

Another delay, but a more specific window

Squadron 42 has had a long and repeatedly shifting development timeline, but the new announcement at least narrows the target from a general 2026 window to Q2 2027.

Cloud Imperium is also planning to let a selected group of backers and Star Citizen creators play Squadron 42 in October 2026, with more launch information expected around that period. For now, though, anyone waiting for Chris Roberts’ spiritual successor to Wing Commander will have to wait a little longer.

If the words “Wing Commander” mean nothing to you, there’s still some time to acquaint yourself with these classics.
