Fans of the original Dragon’s Dogma had to wait a decade for a promise of a sequel, and two more years to get to enjoy the game itself. But the wait is now (almost) over.

Judging by the revealed material, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be a little bit of a reboot, taking place in a new setting (kingdoms of Vermund and Battahl) with the same quasi-medieval theming and seemingly even a few overlapping plot points.

The premise appears to be the same: our heart is eaten by a dragon, marking us as the Arisen, which allows us to recruit Pawns — AI-controlled companions filling in niches the player character can’t during dynamic combat against huge (and/or numerous) monsters.
Speaking of niches and character options, the vocation system is also clearly back, with some tweaks.

In DD2 we’re getting a mix of classics (such as the mighty Warrior) and new ones, like the gallant Mystic Spearhand, which seems to have stepped in for the original’s Mystic Knight. There’s also a whole new species in the game: the catlike, majestic Beastren. Better yet: they are available in character creation for both the Arisen and the Pawns.

All in all, Dragon’s Dogma 2 looks incredibly promising, with crunchy combat, diverse vocations, RE Engine powered graphics, and an open world said to be rich in emergent events.

How much of it will be true? We’ll see when the game launches on March 22, 2024.
