After more than ten years of playing as a solitary monster hunter, players can now bring others along for the ride.

A team of modders has released a major update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that introduces a working online multiplayer mode. The mod is called (not surprisingly) Witcher Online.

It is getting a lot of attention across the community because it removes the single-player restriction that has defined the game since its original release in 2015.

The update introduces a shared world created by the community where players can meet and interact with each other in real time while exploring locations like Velen or Novigrad.

A Community-Built Co-op Experiment

The mod was created by someone using the name rejuvenate, also known as Rejuvenate7, along with a small team. It functions as a co-op rework of the base game. At this stage, the mod is still considered a proof of concept. That means bugs and performance issues are expected, but the core systems suggest real progress rather than a tech demo.

Players can join custom servers that support up to five people at once. The mod keeps player movements, animations, and equipped gear in sync. If someone is wearing Grandmaster Witcher armor, others will see it in full detail.

Everyone Is Geralt, Until They Are Not

Since each player loads their own save file, everyone starts out as Geralt. That leads to groups filled with identical characters. To deal with this, the mod works alongside another community-made project called Custom Player Characters.

This lets players switch Geralt’s model to characters like Triss, Yennefer, or Lambert. Visual details can be adjusted, which helps groups feel less repetitive.

Shared Worlds, Separate Quests

Players can travel together, ride horses, swim, or relax at taverns. The mod supports Chill Out, which adds gestures and social animations for casual interaction. Quest progression, though, is still handled individually. Multiple people can start the same mission, but progress only applies to their own save file.

Other players cannot assist with monster fights or puzzles tied to another person’s quest. This was done to avoid save corruption. Testers have reported occasional crashes when multiple quests are triggered at once, but the shared world already supports chat and light roleplay, which changes how the game feels moment to moment.

Setup Requirements and Installation Notes

To use the mod, players need The Witcher 3 updated to version 4.04 on GOG or Steam. Both Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone must be installed. The Community Patch Shared Imports mod is also required for compatibility.

Installation takes more effort than most mods, but once it is running, sessions are stable enough for regular play.

Why Witcher Online is So Exciting

The Witcher 3 was built as a single-player game, and CD Projekt Red has never shown interest in adding multiplayer. What keeps the game alive is its modding scene. Projects like Skyrim Together showed how multiplayer can reshape older open-world games, and Witcher Online aims to do the same.

The timing matters too. CD Projekt Red has announced plans for cross-platform modding tools on consoles in 2026. That support gives long-term value to ambitious community projects like this one.

A New Way to Revisit the Continent

Witcher Online opens new doors. Friends can explore together, streamers can host group sessions, and fans can organize casual meetups in places like Novigrad. Even without shared combat or card games, seeing other players roaming the world makes the game feel different.

The mod is available now on Nexus Mods. There is also an active Discord server where players can find groups, share feedback, and troubleshoot setup issues.
