The Witcher 4 is now targeting a 2028 release, giving us the clearest window yet for Ciri’s first full adventure as the protagonist of a new Witcher saga.
That does not mean Witcher fans have to wait two years for something substantial. CD Projekt Red is heading into Gamescom 2026 with fresh information on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, while the company also has two advanced, unannounced gaming projects sitting quietly in the background. Gamescom suddenly feels like a very interesting place to be.

The Witcher 4 is targeting 2028
We finally have a much clearer idea of when The Witcher 4 could arrive.
Ahead of Gamescom, CD Projekt Joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the studio is targeting 2028 for the next mainline Witcher game. That is a target rather than a locked release date, so there is still room for plans to change during development.
Still, this is far more specific than the previous situation. CD Projekt had already made it clear that The Witcher 4 would not arrive in the immediate future, but 2028 now gives players a realistic point on the calendar.
The scale helps explain the wait. Nowakowski said that more than 500 developers are working on the project, which CD Projekt describes as a huge open-world RPG with an ambitious story and action-heavy gameplay.
Importantly, the Unreal Engine 5 presentation above is a technology demo rather than gameplay from the finished game. It does, however, show the technical foundation CD Projekt and Epic Games are building for the new saga.
What do we know about The Witcher 4?
The Witcher 4 begins a new trilogy and puts Ciri in the lead role.
CD Projekt describes her as a professional monster slayer embarking on a journey through a brutal dark-fantasy world. The game will remain a single-player open-world RPG, this time powered by Unreal Engine 5 rather than the REDengine technology behind The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
The studio has also confirmed that the new adventure will take players into Kovir, expanding the playable Continent into a region that has been important to Witcher lore without previously becoming the focus of a mainline game.
That makes the transition from Geralt to Ciri more than a protagonist swap. The Witcher 4 is supposed to establish the foundations of an entirely new saga.
CD Projekt is teasing the future of The Witcher at Gamescom
Then came a very interesting message from the official Witcher Bluesky account.
CD Projekt invited fans to Gamescom to hear more about “the future of The Witcher franchise.”
That wording naturally raises expectations beyond a single trailer. At minimum, we already know exactly one major piece of that future will be there: Songs of the Past.
Gamescom Opening Night Live takes place on August 25, followed by the main show in Cologne from August 26 to August 30.
Whether The Witcher 4 itself gets another substantial presentation is less certain. With a 2028 target, CD Projekt still has plenty of development and marketing runway ahead.
Songs of the Past is the big confirmed reveal

Before Ciri takes over, Geralt is getting one more major adventure.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past is officially the third full expansion for The Witcher 3, following Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
It is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, a studio that includes veterans who previously worked on The Witcher 3. The expansion launches in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
CD Projekt has confirmed that new information will be revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live. Players attending Gamescom will then be able to watch guided presentations at the studio’s booth from August 26 onward.
We already know Songs of the Past will return us to Geralt and add an entirely new chapter to The Witcher 3. CD Projekt has even described the expansion as something that can indirectly function as a reminder or prologue on the road toward The Witcher 4.
That gives Gamescom a neat generational setup: one more journey with Geralt before the series fully passes the silver sword to Ciri.
We have been following the expansion closely on G2A News. You can read our original Songs of the Past announcement coverage and our earlier look at what CD Projekt is bringing to Gamescom.
What about CD Projekt’s two unannounced games?
This is where things get more speculative.
During its Q1 2026 earnings discussion, CD Projekt confirmed that it currently has two unannounced gaming projects at an advanced, capitalized stage of development, alongside another unannounced non-gaming project.
These are separate from projects we already know about. For example, Project Sirius, the experimental multiplayer Witcher game, is considered an announced project by CD Projekt and therefore is not one of those two mystery games.
Important: CD Projekt has not said that either mystery project will be revealed at Gamescom. The studio’s invitation to hear about the future of The Witcher makes additional announcements possible, but connecting the two unannounced projects directly to Gamescom is speculation for now.
That distinction matters. There are two real mystery games in development, and there is a very deliberately worded Witcher Gamescom tease. Those facts make surprise reveals fun to consider, but they do not guarantee that Geoff Keighley’s stage is about to produce two new CD Projekt logos.
Still, the studio itself has repeatedly emphasized the value of surprise when deciding when to reveal future projects. If CD Projekt does have something unexpected ready, Gamescom would certainly be a very convenient stage for it.
Play more Witcher while you wait
2028 is still a long way away, and even Songs of the Past is not coming until 2027. Fortunately, the Continent already has plenty to keep you busy.

The Path to 2028 suddenly looks busy
On paper, 2028 sounds painfully distant. In practice, CD Projekt now has enough Witcher activity to make the wait much more interesting.
Geralt returns in Songs of the Past in 2027. Ciri takes over in The Witcher 4 after that. Project Sirius and The Witcher remake remain in development, and two additional mystery games are still sitting behind closed doors.
Gamescom will not necessarily answer every question at once, but CD Projekt’s wording is certainly inviting speculation.
The Witcher 4 may be targeting 2028, but the road there looks anything but quiet.
