Sanitarium is coming back in 2026 with a new Enhanced edition. The cult psychological horror adventure originally released in 1998 is getting a modernized PC version from QUByte Interactive and DreamForge Intertainment, with Ziggurat Interactive publishing.
Sanitarium Enhanced adds modern conveniences
The new version keeps the original point-and-click adventure intact while addressing some of the friction that comes with playing a game from the late 1990s. Sanitarium Enhanced will support widescreen gameplay, controllers, and Steam Deck, alongside an optional hint system for finding interactable objects.
Players will also be able to toggle movement speed, while legacy bugs and other issues are being fixed for the new release. An extras gallery will include bonus material from the original development team, including content that has never previously been shown publicly.
The story remains centered on an amnesiac man who awakens disfigured inside a decaying asylum. His attempt to understand what happened leads through increasingly surreal locations, including a village populated by deformed children, insect-like mutations, and a grotesque circus.
For now, the Steam page lists only a 2026 release window, with no exact date announced. Sanitarium Enhanced is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
Nearly three decades after the original, this looks less like a reinvention and more like an effort to make one of PC gaming’s stranger psychological horror adventures easier to play on modern hardware without sanding away what made it memorable.
There’s no narrowed-down release date yet, but if you want to compare the two versions in the future, you can still grab the original.
