A previously unknown Star Wars action RPG has resurfaced after development footage from the cancelled project appeared online. Internally codenamed Magellan, the game was being developed by Echtra Games, the studio behind Torchlight III, before the project disappeared along with the studio itself.
The footage comes from the portfolio of a former developer and offers the first real look at what Magellan was supposed to be. Rather than another single-player Jedi adventure, the project appears to have been a third-person multiplayer action RPG with playable Jedi and Mandalorian-style characters, loot-driven progression, Imperial enemies, and several distinctly Star Wars creatures.
What was Star Wars Magellan?
Magellan was being created at Echtra Games in collaboration with NaturalMotion, another Zynga-owned studio. Development reportedly used Unreal Engine 5 and targeted PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The newly surfaced clips show third-person combat with at least two distinct character types: a Jedi and a Mandalorian. Other development materials reveal Stormtroopers, bounty hunters, droids, an Ugnaught, Gundarks, Anoobas, and additional creatures and animation rigs.
The presence of Imperial Stormtroopers also gives a rough indication of the era the game was using, although the leaked material does not provide enough information to establish a precise point in the Star Wars timeline.
It appears to have been a multiplayer loot-driven RPG
Reports describing the cancelled project characterize Magellan as a multiplayer action RPG with “shoot and loot” elements. The footage suggests that combat would have mixed blasters, melee weapons, and Force abilities depending on the character being played.
Another reported mechanic was a Bond system. Its full implementation is unknown, but the name suggests that players may have been able to build relationships with NPCs despite Magellan being designed around multiplayer.
The material is clearly unfinished, so it is difficult to judge how much of the final game had been designed or how its RPG progression, missions, and cooperative structure would have worked.
Magellan never made it to an official reveal
Development of an unnamed RPG involving Echtra Games and NaturalMotion had previously been acknowledged in 2021, but its identity as a Star Wars project was not publicly known at the time. The Magellan codename and Star Wars connection have only become apparent now that former development material has surfaced.
Echtra Games was later shut down by Zynga, leaving Magellan as another cancelled Star Wars project that never reached a public announcement, let alone release. What remains now is a collection of gameplay clips and development assets showing what the studio had been building.
Another Star Wars game that almost was
There is no indication that Magellan itself is being revived, so the resurfaced footage is best viewed as a look at a cancelled branch of Star Wars gaming history rather than a tease for something still in production.
There are, however, two Star Wars games with firm releases much closer on the calendar. Turn-based tactics fans can read our full guide to Star Wars Zero Company, which launches on August 27, 2026, while racing fans can check out Star Wars: Galactic Racer, due on October 6, 2026.
