We now know Where Winds Meet, and unfortunately, they are not going to meet on Xbox.
NetEase and Everstone Studio’s upcoming wuxia game extravaganza, Where Winds Meet now has specified the platforms it’s arriving to when it leaves the borders of China, where it’s been out for a hot second.
This mean good news for people who have PCs and PlayStation 5, and, unfortunately, bad news for people doing all their gaming on an Xbox, because Microsoft’s console is being scorned.
Whether it’s permanent or just a “for the time being” thing remains to be seen, but at the time of writing PlayStation 5 has console exclusivity for WWM and anything else is a matter of hopes and dreams.
A worldwide release of Where Winds Meet is said to be sometime later this year, but if you’re itching to take it out for a spin, there is a week-long closed beta starting on July 24/25 (depending on your timezone, as usual) and you can sign up right now through this link to NetEase’s own website. It’s not a guaranteed access, however. NetEase states that you’ll only get the beta code if “your gamer profile aligns with what [NetEase are] looking for” without elaborating on what this even means, but there is a survey attached.
Where Winds Meet is an open-world RPG mixed with action-adventure, putting you in the role of a swordmaster in 10th century China, specifically the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. What is probably going to be the biggest difference between WWM and other wuxia-adjacent games such as Black Myth: Wukong or the upcoming Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, is that NetEase’s game is not just an action game. It’s going to also feature RPG subsystems, aiming for an immersive open world.
It will, of course, still feature combat spectacle, it comes with the genre. It just has ambitions to be more dynamic and having something on offer to players who like combat as the spice, rather than the meal. And combat won’t limit you to just the sword, either. There’s said to even be a way to fight with an umbrella, alongside more traditional weapons.
One way or another, the game is probably not too far from release, can be already wishlisted, but no firm dates are available at the time of writing.
