CONTROL Resonant takes Remedy’s reality-bending action series out of the Oldest House and drops Dylan Faden into a Manhattan where gravity, architecture, and common sense are all having a very bad day.
It is a direct sequel to CONTROL, but not simply more of the same. Dylan replaces Jesse as the playable protagonist, the city becomes far more open, progression leans harder into action-RPG systems, and the shapeshifting Aberrant pushes combat toward aggressive melee instead of relying primarily on a supernatural firearm.

CONTROL Resonant release date
CONTROL Resonant launches digitally on September 24, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. GeForce NOW support is planned at launch, while the Mac version is coming later in 2026 through Steam and the App Store.
There is one wrinkle for collectors. Remedy has confirmed that the physical edition has moved to October 15, 2026, so console players buying boxed copies will have to wait several weeks longer than digital players.

What is CONTROL Resonant?
CONTROL Resonant is the sequel to Remedy Entertainment’s 2019 supernatural action game CONTROL. Instead of returning to the Oldest House for another mostly enclosed adventure, Remedy is expanding the disaster into Manhattan.
The result is described as an action-adventure RPG with larger, open-ended zones, deeper progression, exploration, supernatural traversal, gravity anomalies, puzzles, and much more melee-focused combat.
The basic CONTROL fantasy is still intact. Reality is unstable, the Federal Bureau of Control knows far more than it admits, hostile paranormal forces are everywhere, and telekinesis remains a perfectly acceptable response to most workplace emergencies.

CONTROL Resonant story and Dylan Faden
This time, Dylan Faden is the protagonist. After years of confinement by the FBC, Dylan is deployed during a supernatural crisis that has escaped the Oldest House and spread across Manhattan.
A mysterious cosmic entity is altering reality while familiar threats including the Hiss and the Mold remain active. Meanwhile, Jesse Faden, Dylan’s sister and the Director of the FBC, is missing.
That creates an interesting reversal of the first game. Jesse entered the Bureau as an outsider and slowly discovered how strange its world was. Dylan grew up surrounded by that strangeness. The paranormal is familiar to him. Ordinary life is the alien territory.
Returning characters include Emily Pope and Simon Arish, while Zoe de Vera joins Dylan as a new FBC ally.
CONTROL Resonant gameplay, powers, and the Aberrant
The biggest mechanical change is obvious the moment Dylan starts fighting. Jesse had the shapeshifting Service Weapon. Dylan gets the Aberrant, a supernatural melee weapon that transforms into different forms depending on what the situation requires.
Confirmed forms include Hammer, Blades, Scythe, and Fists. Combine those with Dylan’s supernatural powers, environmental attacks, aerial movement, and reality-bending traversal, and Resonant looks much more aggressive at close range than its predecessor.
Combat is built around momentum. Melee attacks can restore combat resources, supernatural abilities can stun enemies, and stunned targets can be opened up for executions. The idea is to keep players moving and attacking rather than hiding behind cover.
Progression goes much further than a linear collection of upgrades. Players can unlock new Aberrant forms, supernatural abilities, combos, talents, and loadout options, then specialize around the attacks they enjoy using most.

How Manhattan changes CONTROL
Moving outside the Oldest House sounds simple until you remember who is making the game.
This is not meant to be ordinary New York with some floating debris sprinkled over Times Square. Resonant’s Manhattan has been reshaped by paranormal forces. Streets, buildings, gravity, and spatial logic can distort as different influences take hold.
Remedy has specifically clarified that CONTROL Resonant is not a traditional open-world game. Instead, Manhattan is divided into large, distinct, handcrafted zones containing story missions, World Quests, hidden encounters, environmental challenges, side activities, and optional discoveries. Gravity Anomalies push that structure further. Dylan can use abilities such as Reach and Shift to navigate roads, walls, rooftops, and other surfaces after reality has decided that down is merely a suggestion.
That approach gives Resonant more freedom than CONTROL while avoiding the familiar map-cleaning structure of a giant checklist-driven open world.

If you buy a preorder offer through a marketplace, read its item page carefully. Bonus eligibility, delivery timing, platform, and regional activation can vary between offers.
Do you need to play CONTROL before CONTROL Resonant?
No, but it is recommended. Remedy has designed Resonant so newcomers can understand it without completing the original game first.
Still, CONTROL gives Dylan’s story considerably more weight. It explains Jesse, the FBC, the Hiss, Dylan’s captivity, the Oldest House, Objects of Power, Altered World Events, and most of the vocabulary Resonant assumes its returning players already know.
If you have time before September 24, CONTROL Ultimate Edition is the cleanest starting point because it includes the base game plus The Foundation and AWE expansions.

CONTROL Resonant FAQ
When does CONTROL Resonant release?
The digital version launches September 24, 2026. Physical console editions are scheduled for October 15, 2026.
Who is the protagonist?
Dylan Faden replaces Jesse as the playable protagonist. Jesse remains central to the story, but she is missing when Resonant begins.
Is CONTROL Resonant open world?
No. Remedy describes it as a game built around large, distinct, handcrafted zones with story missions, World Quests, hidden encounters, optional activities, and exploration.
Do I need to play CONTROL first?
No. Resonant is designed to work for newcomers, but playing CONTROL first will give Dylan and Jesse’s relationship considerably more context.
Is CONTROL Resonant a shooter?
Not in quite the same way as CONTROL. Dylan still uses supernatural abilities and the environment offensively, but the shapeshifting Aberrant makes close-range melee combat a much bigger part of the sequel.
What forms can the Aberrant use?
Remedy has shown Hammer, Blades, Scythe, and Fists so far, with additional forms still being kept under wraps.
How long is CONTROL Resonant?
Current developer estimates point to around 30 hours for the core experience and roughly 50 hours for players exploring more thoroughly.
The Oldest House could not contain this one
The smartest thing about CONTROL Resonant may be that Remedy is not treating a bigger sequel as permission to simply make a bigger Oldest House.
Dylan, the Aberrant, Manhattan, deeper RPG progression, gravity-bending traversal, and a much more physical combat style give the sequel its own identity while keeping the paranormal bureaucracy and reality-breaking weirdness that made CONTROL work.
September 24 is close. Manhattan, unfortunately, looks considerably less prepared than we are.
