What is Crimson Moon?

Crimson Moon is a third-person gothic action RPG built around fast melee combat and replayable expeditions into Gildenarch.

The city has been consumed by demons, undead, vampires, and Hellgrowth. Humanity responds with the Order of the Crimson Moon and its Nephilim warriors, hybrids of humans and angels capable of using conventional weapons, supernatural abilities, and angelic transformations.

The interesting part is the structure. Crimson Moon may look like a conventional linear Soulslike at first glance, but it is built around repeatable hunts, permanent progression, changing builds, selectable missions, loot, and increasing difficulty.

How does Crimson Moon gameplay work?

Combat is focused on aggressive melee encounters against groups of regular enemies, elites, minibosses, and major bosses. ProbablyMonsters describes it as souls-inspired, but Crimson Moon also includes selectable difficulty and higher rewards for taking on harder missions.

There are no traditional character classes. Instead, your Nephilim is defined by weapons, armor, trinkets, Weapon Arts, Boons, and the Angel chosen before a hunt. That gives the game a more flexible buildcrafting system than locking players into one permanent archetype.

A Nephilim can equip four armor pieces, two trinkets, a one-handed weapon and shield, and a two-handed weapon. Weapon Arts give individual weapons active abilities, while Boons can increase damage, improve survivability, restore health, regenerate flasks, or create more specialized combat synergies.

How do runs, loot, and progression work?

Every hunt starts in Sanctus Clypeus, the headquarters of the Knights of the Crimson Moon. This is your central hub for upgrading equipment, speaking with NPCs, preparing a loadout, and choosing the next destination at the War Table.

From there, you enter one of Gildenarch’s Wards. Each Ward contains replayable missions with enemies, secrets, elite encounters, minibosses, loot, and a powerful boss at the end.

Runs have their own temporary progression. Nexus Gates let you select temporary Boons that stay active during the current hunt, so a build can change considerably between the first mission and the final boss.

Permanent progression exists too. Equipment discovered during a successful hunt can eventually be Purified and added to your permanent collection for future loadouts. Lore Scrolls can unlock additional Boons, while favorite weapons and armor can be improved over time.

Can you play Crimson Moon solo or in co-op?

Yes. Crimson Moon supports both solo play and two-player online co-op.

Co-op is more than simply adding another sword to the screen. Players can coordinate equipment and Boons to create complementary builds. One player can lean heavily into offense while the other prioritizes survivability, or both can stack aggressive effects and try to overwhelm encounters quickly.

Difficulty scaling is designed to adapt the challenge, which also makes Crimson Moon interesting for players who like the atmosphere and combat of Soulslikes but do not necessarily want one fixed difficulty level.

Crimson Moon FAQ

When does Crimson Moon come out?

Crimson Moon releases on September 1, 2026.

Is Crimson Moon a Soulslike?

Its developers describe the melee combat as souls-inspired, but the full structure is broader. Crimson Moon mixes that combat style with replayable hunts, selectable difficulty, loot, permanent progression, and temporary run-based upgrades.

Does Crimson Moon have co-op?

Yes. You can complete hunts alone or with one other player in two-player online co-op.

Does Crimson Moon have classes?

No traditional classes. Builds are created through weapons, armor, trinkets, Weapon Arts, Boons, and Angels.

What is included in Crimson Moon Deluxe Edition?

The Deluxe Edition contains the base game, Ceremonial Armor Set, Axe of the Gods, and entitlement to one post-launch content expansion.

Is Crimson Moon open world?

It is structured around the city of Gildenarch, individual Wards, and replayable missions rather than being presented as a traditional seamless open-world RPG.

Hail the Moon, sharpen the build

Crimson Moon sits in an interesting space between a Soulslike, loot-driven action RPG, and run-based co-op game. The combat asks for timing and aggression, but selectable difficulty, permanent equipment progression, temporary Boons, replayable missions, and two-player co-op give players more ways to approach the challenge.

If that combination works, Gildenarch could become the sort of city players revisit not because the game sends them back through identical content, but because the next weapon, Boon combination, difficulty jump, or co-op build changes how the hunt plays.
